Installing MS Reporting Services Probs

Hi NG
We have a problem to install the MS Reporting Services 2000 on a Windows
2003 Server Web Edition.
IIS is propertly installed, runing, and its serves many wepages.
During the installation (System prequestites check) of RS comes the
following message:
"IIS either not installed or not configured for a server component
installation"
We have no idea, how we can configure the IIS for server component
installations.
Thx for help.
Greets TomSeems you can only install Reporting Services Developer Edition on Windows
2003 server Web edition:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/rsinstall/htm/gs_installingrs_v1_8jom.asp
Or maybe you can try setting it up as a web farm, as your database will have
to be running on a different server anyway:

Installing IIS v6.0 on SQL Server 2000

I have heard and read if at all possible do not install IIS on your SQL Servers. It is best to keep them seperate for 1) Performance 2) Opens up security issues. So we have always installed IIS on our web servers only. Isn't this the best case scenario
? I have a developer who wants to install IIS on all the SQL Server boxes and I am against it. What would his reasonings be?
Thanks,
Warren
IIS is very complex thing and there are many patches and unpatched things
especially if you enable full functionallity.
Here last one
http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/10116
If someone get access to the web server, if you use sql account with limited
rights he still will not be able to hurt your data, but if he get access to
the same machine where is your data he can do everything. The data is the
most critical thing. If you burn your web server it will take few hours to
get the application copied and configured but if your data server is gone
then you must find your last backup and most probably you will lose data,
see that I do not talk that if someone get sensitive data about your
business or clients he can burn your entire business or your reputacy.
If IIS is not critically needed at the SQL Server side - do not install it.
Price for another server is much lower that the risk.

Installing IIS and SRS at a later date

How difficult would it be to install IIS and SRS in a SQL Server 2005 x64 installation at a later date? What steps would I take?

Thanks!

Run the installer should be all that is involved.|||

I was thinking it might be that simple but preferred some confirmation.

Thanks!

Installing IIS After installing SQL server 2005 and visual studio 2005 help requested!

Hi all, Im new here so il start with a little introduction of myself, My name is Arjan im 19 years old from Holland, and i work for a company to compleet my ICT Education.

My situation:

My boss gave me a server with server 2003 standard and Sql server 2005 and visual studio 2005 installed already, he asked me if i could figure out how the 'new' reporting services work, Im pretty new to SQL and the reporting service but i figured out i had to install asp.net / frameworks and IIS.

So right now i wanna start the Reporting Services Configuration Manager and i get an error that says 'Invalid namespace' and when im trying to approach by using my browser i get 'page not found' so obviously their is Alot wrong. I asked my boss if i could not reinstall everything and do it in the correct order (IIS / ASP.net / Frameworks before installing SQL server 2k5 but that was not an option because we dont seem to have the cd's anymore.

The server is not connected to any network or the internet.

My Question:

Is their any way to fix this? and if yes could anyone tell me where to start

Thanks in Advance!

ps if their is information or logs that u need in order to help me just say so :-)

-Arjan

You are getting "Invalid namespace", check if you have installed SSRS properly or not. Check in the installation folders if you have all the folders (Log files, Report manager, report server, RSTempfiles). Also, for the config files.

You cannot report manager for sure since your SSRS is not configured properly. If you find nothing else, i guess you will have to reinstall SSRS.

To check for IIS, see if you are able to open the IIS Manager or not!!

installed ssl-certificate -> SQL-Server locked !

Hello NG,
we just installed a ssl-certificate (created with MS-selfssl) on the IIS of
a win2k-Server and since reboot the SQL-Server on the same machine cannot be
accessed anymore. The Enterprise Manager tells us "SSL Security Error.
ConnectionOpen (SECDoClientHandshake()).."
Meanwhile we deleted the certificate, but the server's still locked. What
can we do?
Greatful for any hint,
MarcMake sure that the "force Protocol encryption" option is removed from both
the
Server Network Utility and the CLient network Utility.
Once you remove the certificate, SQL must be restarted. Just MSSQLServer
service, not the machine.
Thanks,

But how can we modify the Database's options? They're locked as well.
Are there some command line options? How are they applied?

Does the server start?
Is the problem only establishing connections from Enterprise Manager?

already been deactivated for both active protocols (Named Pipes and TCP/IP).
Before, we also removed the certificate. Nothing happened. The SQL-Server is
still locked.
General question : how can we use a ssl-certificate for the web-service
together with a SQL-Server on the same machine? As far as I experienced now,
this is a dangerous experiment if no real MS-Experts are around!? Are there
manuals available?
Still greatful for any hint,

It looks like. The green arrow shows up.

"General question : how can we use a ssl-certificate for the web-service

For SQL 2000 to use protocol encryption, SSL, the server must have a
Certificate issued to the FQDN name of the computer.
This would be the same if you were to setup IIS for SSL using Server
Authentication. So, if IIS and SQL are on the same machine,
then you just need one certificate. You can use the IIS tools to install
the certificate, since SQL doesn't supply any user tools.
I wrote the following two articles. and did the Webcast on setting up SSL

completely. So I deleted the rest, rebooted and had the database back!

Installation Stalls at "Detecting Installed IIS"

I try to install but once it gets to Installation Status window it freezes at Detecting Installed IIS. What do I do to get past this wonderful step? And who tested this installation process? Better yet, who let it be releases with so many bugs?

do you have Norton/Symantec antivirus software running on your machine? If so, temporarily disable it and rerun setup.

|||

Thank youl. I finally had success.

Seems like turning it off (Symantec Antivirus) was not a guarantee for success -- I did turn it off before with no success; uninstalling all might have helped too where I then installed it fresh.

Installation problems

I'm having a problem getting reporting services up and running on a Windows
2000 Server (sp 4)
I started by making sure IIS was installed, then I installed the .net
framework 1.1, so far everything looked good. SQL Server 2K sp 3 is
installed on the same server.
I installed reporting services and it seemed to install fine, it stopped at
one point and while I was reading the message it continued, then at the end
it said that it could not initialize report server.
Per the documentation I restarted the report server service, ran
rsactivate -c <path to report server.config> and received this message:
The Report Server Web service has not generated a public key. The
service may not have started successfully. Check the log files for more
information.
I could really use some help with this, I understand that MSDN developers
are supposed to get help through the newsgroups within 72 hours yet I have
posted twice on another group/topic and my posts have been ignored.
Thanks in advance;
David Craig.

I experinced "report server could not initialize"
1. Do you have another service running on IIS and use 80 port?
2. Plz go "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting
Services\ReadMe_EN.htm" to read this file, and read 1.7, 1.8
1.7 Install Hotfix
1.8. Reporting Services on a domain controller requires manual
configuration after setup
try it..
Last, oh... your OS is Win2000 SP4.. then couldn't run Windows SharePoint
Service..
This is another point to cause RS couldn't initialize.. forget about it. :)
Good Luck!

Thanks for replying:
1. I don't believe there are any other services running on port 80, only
SQL Server and terminal services are running on the server. I'll check on
that first.
2. I did read the readme but since I'm not running W03 and the server is
not a domain controller I didn't think it applied, I did use a IWAM account
so I could try changing that.
If I do figure it out I'll post the solution in case someone else comes here
with the same problem.

Installation Problem

After installing Reporting Services on our IIS machine, when I type in the
following url:
http://<issmachine name>/ReportManager I get the following error:
Access denied to 'F:\Inetpub\<root web>\web.config'. Failed to start
monitoring file changes.
Does any one know why this problem occurs, and how to resolve it?Should have added, when I installed Reporting Services I got the following
message at the end of the installation:
Setup could not initialize the Report Server. You must manually initialize
the report server before using it for the first time. For more information,
see the reporting services setup documentation.
Would someone point me to where I can find some good instructions for
"manually initializing the report server".

Installation Of SSRS

I have two machines on a network (Machine A and Machine B). Machine A has SQL
Server and IIS installed on it and Machine B is the web server. Machine B
does not have Sql Server.
Is there any way by which I can upload my .rdl files on Machine B ie; create
the virtual folders (Reports and ReportsServer) on Machine B?
TIAafraid not as far as I know. When you deploy the reports the rdl files
are actually stored in the reporting services database, which is on
machine A. They aren't stored as physical files on your web server /
Machine B.
A further problem - if you're using RS 200 - is that the web server
will have to have an instance of SQL server installed on it, as the
reporting services database has to be on the same machine as the web
project. Sounds crazy I know but that's the way it is.|||This is so wrong. You DO NOT have to have SQL Server installed where RS is
installed. A quick primer.
RS is an asp.net application. It uses SQL Server as its metadata/object
store. SQL Server can be either on the same machine or on another machine
(this is true for both RS 2000 and RS 2005). If you have Enterprise you can
support a web farm. Several RS servers all sharing the same database (this
means reports, subscriptions, security, etc is setup once for the whole web
farm deployment).
Licensing is a different matter. Any box that has RS installed needs a SQL
Server license, just the same as if you do have SQL Server on the box.
My preference is to have SQL Server on the same box even if my data is
somewhere else. It doesn't cost any more and then my metadata/object storage
is on the same machine as RS. However, again, you do not have to do this.
Note, if the intention is to integrate RS with your own web app you should
really really consider RS 2005. RS 2005 does not require a SQL Server 2005
database, it can use SQL Server 2000 database BUT you do have to buy a SQL
Server 2005 license for the box running RS. VS 2005 has two new controls
that work only with RS 2005: a web form and a winform control. The webform
control makes integration much easier and it is easier to get fuller
functionality quicker than anything you could do with RS 2000.

SSRS, but it is givinng me error "Login Failed for Guest". I can login to the
Query Analyzer from this remote machine but SSRS is not allowing to connect.
What is the proper way of assiging user name and pwd while installing SSRS.
Do I have to make changes to logins and users on the sql machine.

installation media

Hi,
I am running SQL Server 2000 SP4 on Windows Server 2003 and IIS Server 6.0
on the same machine. I have a SQL Server 2000 installation CD. I don't find
Reporting Services included in that CD. From where can I get the Reporting
Services component? Thanks in advance.SQL Server2000' Reporting Services was released (2003) well after SQL
Server2000 (1999), as add-on. So, if your SQL Server CD was acquired before
RS available, it would not contain RS obviously. Usually, SQL Server2000
Reporting Services comes in a seperate disk. If you have a legal copy of SQL
Server2000, you are entitled for free SQL Server Reporting Services. You may
have to contact the dealer who sold you the SQL Server copy, if you do not
have one.

installation issues

Hi all,
I am trying to install SQL 2005 on my new laptop (VISTA), but for some
reason reporting services is not available to install. I have IIS installed
and the services are running. Does anyone know of a reason SRS is not
available?
TIA,
JoeHello,
check this article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920201
"In this scenario, you receive the following warning message for the IIS
Feature Requirement item on the System Configuration Check page in the SQL
Server 2005 Setup program:
Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is either not installed or is
disabled. IIS is required by some SQL Server features. Without IIS, some SQL
Server features will not be available for installation. .... "
