Installing MSDE

Hi,
I have been having difficulty installing MSDE 2000 Rel A. It starts the process and then gives a message stating that MicroSoft SQL Server Desktop Engine Setup failed. I ran the install program with a log file and found an entry that failed. (value 3).
Here is the entry from the log file
...
Starting custom action InstallSQLAgentSecurity
InstallSQLAgentSecurity failed (RPC0419,LocalSystem,87).
Action ended 15:29:52: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please make sure that your File & Print services is started.
Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services then start 'Server'.

Thanks for the response. I looked at the services in the Administrative tools but I don't see anything for file and print sharing. I can enable it for the local hard disk if that is necessary. I will work on trying to start them and let you know what h

There is no service listed as Server. The computer I am trying to load MSDE on is Win 2000 Pro machine. Is it possible to load it on Win2000 Pro? (I would also like to load on my XP Pro machine at home as well.)
I also have access to the SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager, should I use that instead?

selecting Custom Settings, File and Printer sharing must be manually added..
if File and Printer sharing is not available, you have to add it
then, the "Server" service will be available =;-D

Enterprise Manager is to manage SQL Server installed instances... so only
once installed you could use it... by the way, using EM aginst MSDE
instances seems not to be very legal... you should rely on Web Data
Administrator (at MSDE download page) and/or third parties tools like that

I read your and Andrea's comments on your problem.
I installed MSDE2000A on the a Win2K Pro machine with SP4 and all worked well, but only after some adjustments. But mine never failed its installation, so its hard to say why your did.
Please be sure that your MSDE installation is started from the command line with a parameter that sets an instance name. You may already have an unnamed instance installed. See the SQL Server 2000 Books Online for this and other help. Its a free download
able reference document for MSDE2000A. Install it and read the parts on installation and connection. There is also a multitude of MS KB articles on these topics. Its not possible to help more without knowing your system much better.
The File and Printer Sharing that Andrea was refering to is an aspect of your network (LAN) software. The LAN connection properties, will show 3 services: TCP/IP, File and Printer Sharing, and Client for MS Networks. Enable them all, although I'm not sure
why the latter two are needed at all but all I've read. That should at least get you going.

I enabled file and print sharing and tried to install MSDE. It worked perfectly.

I had to enable File and print sharing for Microsoft Networks before I could install MSDE. Once I did that, it installed with out a problem.

Hi,
I am in the process of creating/setting up cubes from an ERP application
(Axapta) across user machines. In some of the machines I noticed an error
message (which I believe) indicates DSO objects not being installed.
A quick look at SQL BOI gave me details of DSO library.
My query is - where can I get hold of this DSO library files?

The DSO library is what Analysis Manager uses to build/manage OLAP
Databases. It should be installed when you install the client tools for
Analysis Services 2000. If there is something wrong with the
registration of the dll the default path is C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\DSO\msmddo80.dll. But as far as I know there is
no re-distributable version of this library. The users would need to be
OLAP Administrators to use it anyway.

Installing 64-Bit SQL 2005 on a 64-Bit server which needs .net 1.1 for CRM installed.

I am in the process of installing our first SQL server in house and after
reading several messages here from this group I have a few questions.
Fist of all, we are having to go with SQL 2000 as both of our applications
we are wanting to move to a SQL enviroment only support SQL 2000 (SQL 2005
is not supported). I already have a WIN2003 AD environment and the new
'rebuilt' server will be a WIN2003/SQL 2000.
How should I configure the hard drives on the new server (I am going to
rebuild the box). Should I use RAID 0,1 or 5? Currently it is a Dell 2600
Dual 2.6 Processor 2GB RAM W2K RAID 5 box. I have heard that we will take a
performance hit with RAID 5? What are the RAID pros/cons from a SQL point?
Any tips or suggestions for installing SQL 2000 are GREATLY appreciated!

file.If to expensive use Raid 5.
To maximise I/O in either 5 or 10 use as many physical disks in the array
as supported by controller .As this facilitates read/write to be performed
simultaneously.

Installing .NET Framework on a sql server

We have a DTS package which use .NET Exe as 'Execute Process Task'.
As this is a .NET application, it requires .NET Framework. Can we
install .NET Framework on a Production SQL Server.
What are other options?

PalsIf you want to run a .NET application, you have to install the framework. I
have had no problems having the framework on an SQL server. Be aware that
the ADO.NET components require that you update MDAC to at least 2.7 so that
may affect you.

Installation Question - Service account

Hi All,

We are upgrading from Sql Server Express to SQl Server 2005. As part of the installation process, it is not asking us to specify a service account for various services, and we are not sure what to specify. (This was handled automatically with Express). Any ideas?

This service account specifies under what account is this SQL Server instance running.

If your instance might be querying some domain resource, you can specify a domain account. Or you can just select the System Account.

Installation on Windows XP SP2

I try to install SQL Server 2000 SP3 on my Windows XP server.

During the installation, the setup process inform me database services can't be install on my machine.
I can only install client tools.

It seems to success, but when I try to connect register a new database in the Enterprise Manager tool, connection to my server databases always fail with error:
"waiting time expire"

If I try to connect to the same database with the Querty Analyzer it works.

How can I solve this problem ? His there a patch ?SQL Server 2000 is designed to run on a server OS so it won't install on XP. You can install msde and run small databases just fine.|||sql server standard and sql server enterprise editions are designed to install on server OS's. However, SQL Server Developer edition runs just fine on my windows xp with sp2 laptop.

the developer edition is exactly like SQL Std and Ent in tools looks and function. it is just limited in its client support. somewhere around 8 clients i believe.

on a side note, i worked on a really slow sql server once and found out that they had installed the dev edition on a production server......
pop the cd in
choose upgrade
restart
finished in 2 minutes. that'll be $100.00 please

Are thre any way to create an installation CD to install
SQL 2000 at service pack 3 performing only one setup
process.

Installation Issue

I try to install MSDE using the sapwd switch. During the 'Please wait while
Windows configures Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine' process an error pops
up stating:
Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and
setup error logs for more information.
I searched high and low for installation logs and the event viewer on my
server but I cannot find anything relavent to this error.

as you can see from

the most relevant cause of this exception is due to uncomplete
installation(s) of other MSDE instances...
if you are not involved in this problem, it recently appears due to MDAC
stack corruptions...
if you have WinXP sp2 installed you can not fix it by applying the higher
MDAC stack (http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/mdac/...s/default.aspx)
becouse no refresh is available for that MDAC sp level, but you can fix MDAC
as reported in http://www.macropool.com/en/download...xp_sp2.html...

Installation error an error occured during move data process: -145...?

hi all..

please any one help me in installing sql sp4 in my w2k server machine having sp4 and all the other updates.i tried installing sql sp3 and newly downloaded sql sp4 but shows an error at 97 % of installation that "an error occured during move data process: -145"

its really urgent ....please

thanxz bass for the reply..i installed sql server analysis service and installed the service packs..its now ok...Solved errors..thnk god

but i want to know more about the error..i googled it...nothing meaningful...
