Installing MSDE??

Ok I installed the MSDE and after following the steps the last message box says to go to the control panel and install and configure the components.

I'm not sure what to do once I'm in the control panel.

Thank you.Somewhere along the way did you try to install MSDE but were unsuccessful? What is the exact wording of the message you are receiving?

Terri|||I am also having a problem with the installation of MSDE. About 2/3's the way through the installation the process froze. I cannot uninstall or re-install. The message I am receiving is that the installation was tampered with and needs to be uninstalled and re-installed. When I go to My Computer, Install/Uninstall Software, SQL Server is not listed.

Any suggestions?|||Well, searching the SQL Server and MSDE Forum here for posts from others who have experienced the same thing is a good start. And then starting a new thread with your own particular situation with the exact error messages would be the next step.

Terri|||i have the same probleme.
in my case it was an error of directory\subdirectory

c:\sql2ksp3\MSDE>

don't forget the MSDE subdirectory !! ;)

then type the command : setup SAPWD=xxxx SecurityMode=SQL

i hope it can help you.sql

Installing MSDE SA password error.

I've been trying to install MSDE so i could run ASP.Net Forums. But whenever i run the setup.exe file, it gives me a pop up message with the following message:

"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same. Refer to the readme for more details. Set up will now Exit."

Could any body please tell me what to do??...

Yes. I'm stupid. And please excuse my ignoracne.Go to run and type the following replace path and password optionally you can specify authentication mode (default is windows) SECURITYMODE=SQL.

f:\sql2ksp3\MSDE\setup.exe sapwd="password"

Hope this helps

I have followed the directions in the downloadpage. Any help??

Installing MSDE

Hi,
I have been having difficulty installing MSDE 2000 Rel A. It starts the process and then gives a message stating that MicroSoft SQL Server Desktop Engine Setup failed. I ran the install program with a log file and found an entry that failed. (value 3).
Here is the entry from the log file
...
Starting custom action InstallSQLAgentSecurity
InstallSQLAgentSecurity failed (RPC0419,LocalSystem,87).
Action ended 15:29:52: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services then start 'Server'.

Thanks for the response. I looked at the services in the Administrative tools but I don't see anything for file and print sharing. I can enable it for the local hard disk if that is necessary. I will work on trying to start them and let you know what h

There is no service listed as Server. The computer I am trying to load MSDE on is Win 2000 Pro machine. Is it possible to load it on Win2000 Pro? (I would also like to load on my XP Pro machine at home as well.)
I also have access to the SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager, should I use that instead?

Enterprise Manager is to manage SQL Server installed instances... so only
once installed you could use it... by the way, using EM aginst MSDE
instances seems not to be very legal... you should rely on Web Data

|||Hi Glenn.
I read your and Andrea's comments on your problem.
I installed MSDE2000A on the a Win2K Pro machine with SP4 and all worked well, but only after some adjustments. But mine never failed its installation, so its hard to say why your did.
Please be sure that your MSDE installation is started from the command line with a parameter that sets an instance name. You may already have an unnamed instance installed. See the SQL Server 2000 Books Online for this and other help. Its a free download
able reference document for MSDE2000A. Install it and read the parts on installation and connection. There is also a multitude of MS KB articles on these topics. Its not possible to help more without knowing your system much better.
The File and Printer Sharing that Andrea was refering to is an aspect of your network (LAN) software. The LAN connection properties, will show 3 services: TCP/IP, File and Printer Sharing, and Client for MS Networks. Enable them all, although I'm not sure
why the latter two are needed at all but all I've read. That should at least get you going.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the update.

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup

1. Regarding the error message when you install sqlserver 2005. Can you confirm the following points, cheers:
a. Operating System? (XP?)

b. OS Service Pack level? (SP2?)

c. What flavour of SQL? (Express?)

c. Is this a second instance of SQL or the default one thats failing? (first based on the registry key error?)

d. Have you logged on as local administrator, cleared the temp directory, copied the files onto to the C:\ and tried to install from harddisk?

2. Should you continue to experience problems with this machine, is it possible to test with another PC or rebuild the problematic one?

I've encountered this issue on one PC, yet I was able to install SQL Express successfully on another PC via RDP at the same site but not on another PC that was producing the error your seeing. To cut a long story short, we got onsite staff to reboot the (WinXP SP2) Pc and it started showing symptoms seen in this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;826955
"Virus alert about the Blaster worm and its variants"

3. If you can NOT get another PC to rule-out virus, hardware, media &/or etc related issues as the root cause and would like to pursue troubleshooting.. Can you please run FileMon & RegMon traces (and provide the SQL SETUP LOGS) on the PC while your installing SQL?

Based on the error message, the problem stems from "Error opening file for write: 5." and the API for GetLastError reports a Registry key is to blame: "GetLastError: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Setup." - hence the FileMon and Regmon traces are needed to aid troubleshooting,

To get a FileMon & RegMon traces

goto www.SysInternals.com (I believe the company and its tools were recently purchased by Microsoft - Mark Russinovich and Bruce Cogwell)

Search for FileMon/Regmon
Scroll to bottom of pages
Download the Programs

0. Remote in as Admin and clear the Temp directory.

1. Save Filemon and Regmon to the PC
2. Get ready to start the SQL Express install
3. Launch open Filemon and Regmon. - To start with I recommend stopping the traces and clearing the logs (with tool bar buttons) because when you launch open the programs they quickly start tracing out Disk and Registry Activity
4. When you get very close to the problem occurring start FileMon/RegMon together - tracing out all the activity in real-time.
5. After you encounter the problem, stop the FileMon/Regmon traces
6. Zip up ALL the traces INCLUDING ALL THE SQL SETUP LOGS YOU CAN FIND - hehe and also RUN THE "mps reports" -sql flavour, on the pc - and post them online!!

Regarding the error messages link: setup.rll 2380 error, try looking in your application event log for the events leading up to the problem and cross reference them with www.EventID.net

HTH

PS the tip to analysing these Regmon/FileMon files is (off the top of my head) > Excel > Data menu > Filter item > Auto Filter item. Then select the combobox with Success, Path not found > and set it to DEVICE DATA ERROR or ACCESS DENIED & hunt down those leads!!

|||

Thanks for the reply, although I am a little late in responding. I ended up formating the disk and starting over. It worked ok then.

Thansk for the help.

|||

Thanks for the update Tony,

Good move reformatting the HDD... as your dont want a production system thats potentially been corrupted.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Installation Problems.

I have tried installing SQL Server Express several times. The installation program never completes. It displays a message indicating it found traces of previous versions of SQL Server or Beta versions.

I have verified thouroughly that no beta versions are installed yet I keep getting the same error message. I have uninstalled Visual Studio and related applications and I am still getting the same message.

Can you assit me with this issue? Any help would be appreciated.

After uninstalling everything, did you try to run the beta cleaner ?

Installation of MS SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services

After Installation of MS SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services , It gives message: Setup could not initialize the report Server. You must manually initialize the report Server before usung it for the first time. For more information, see the Reporting Services setup documents.

I have Windows Server 2003.

How I should resolve this problem?
COuld you help me?

Thanks,Hi Alice,

I had this error when I tried to install the RS in a server which was also a DC (Domain Controller) of the network. As I found that this might cause any other issues, I decided to install in another server ...

Have you already googled it? I found a lot of topics about ...

installation issues~

I am unable to download security updates for Outlook 2003- the message I got is: Error Code: 0x80070641...

when I tried installing any of the service packs (1,2, & 3) I am unable to as well. The message I get when doing this is:

The expected version of your product was not found on your system.

How can I fix this?

Thank you,

Ramzer

This is the SQL Server forum. My suggestion would be to locate an Outlook (or security update) forum and post the question there. I tried looking for one, but couldn't find it quickly. You could also post in the "Where's the forum for?" to see what they suggest.

Installation fails on Vista RTM

Hi all!

I couldn't manage to install SQL Server 2005 Express or Standart Edition on Windows Vista. The installation fails with the error message I pasted below:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup

SQL Server Setup failed to execute a command for server configuration. The error was [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Windows NT user or group 'FUSION\SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$FUSION$MSSQLSERVER' not found. Check the name again.. Refer to the server error logs and Setup logs for detailed error information.

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.2047.00&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=29521&EvtType=lib%5codbc_statement.h%40Do_sqlScript%40OdbcStatement%3a%3aexecute_batch%40CnfgSQL%4080%40x3c29

Sam,

I am installing sql server 2005 developer edition on the release vista and I am getting the same issue. One of the solutions on the other thread deals with running a command after sql server 2005 is installed:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=907970&SiteID=1

and the other says the install fails as it does in this thread:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=937333&SiteID=1

When the data services tries to install it fails saying the user or group cannot be found. I have adjusted the UAC on vista by disabling it and have made sure that iis 7 is running. I even have the

ii6 compatiblity turned on for vs 2005. The vista installation is a clean install, but since I cannot get sql server 2005 installed on vista I cannot install the november ctp of sp2. Is the only solution to go back to win xp sp2 install sql server 2005 and its sp2 and vs 2005 and then do an update of win xp sp2 to vista, or is a new install needed for sql server 2005 (one where you don't have to unplug the network cable to get "Setting File Attrbibutes" to stop? I am seeing the same issue in many places when I do a search. Please help.

|||I looked at this thread after I had my first errors. However it shouldn't apply because when I did the install I used a local account and not a domain account. I run on a domain but most of the time I am not working on the domain so to avoid any issues I used the local account. I was thinking this had more to do with windows vista UAC. Will the install still go to the domain controller with a local account install, and could this be related to installs hanging when "setting file security"?|||That thread isn't even relevant because it doesn't have any solutions either. Yes, in my error description was Masine name like this: MachineName, I chang it in MACHINENAME and start install again...but I have same error. After I hit "Retry" i get this message (cancel is only other option)

SQL Server Setup failed to execute a command for server configuration. The error was [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]MODIFY FILE failed. Specified size is less than current size.. Refer to the server error logs and Setup logs for detailed error information.

That is place when Setup tray to exectute some SQL command to configure SQL Server. When I hit cancel (retry it just repeat second error message) setup rool back database engine installaton and go on with setup...it only just a shell of VS, but fail with install of Management Studio and other tools.

Installation error

I am trying to install SQLServer 2005 on a new Windows XP machine with SP2. Unfortuantely I get the error message "The drop location is missing file(s) that allow setup to determine how a multi instance product should be installed. Setup cannot continue, please repair the drop and try again." How do I fix this so that SQL Server can be installed?

Thanks for yor help on this

How are you trying to install SQL? From a CD? DVD? Network? What edition of SQL are you instaling?
