I get the following error message when I install sqlserver 2005.

1. Regarding the error message when you install sqlserver 2005. Can you confirm the following points, cheers:
a. Operating System? (XP?)

b. OS Service Pack level? (SP2?)

c. What flavour of SQL? (Express?)

c. Is this a second instance of SQL or the default one thats failing? (first based on the registry key error?)

d. Have you logged on as local administrator, cleared the temp directory, copied the files onto to the C:\ and tried to install from harddisk?

2. Should you continue to experience problems with this machine, is it possible to test with another PC or rebuild the problematic one?

I've encountered this issue on one PC, yet I was able to install SQL Express successfully on another PC via RDP at the same site but not on another PC that was producing the error your seeing. To cut a long story short, we got onsite staff to reboot the (WinXP SP2) Pc and it started showing symptoms seen in this KB article:

3. If you can NOT get another PC to rule-out virus, hardware, media &/or etc related issues as the root cause and would like to pursue troubleshooting.. Can you please run FileMon & RegMon traces (and provide the SQL SETUP LOGS) on the PC while your installing SQL?

Based on the error message, the problem stems from "Error opening file for write: 5." and the API for GetLastError reports a Registry key is to blame: "GetLastError: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Setup." - hence the FileMon and Regmon traces are needed to aid troubleshooting,

To get a FileMon & RegMon traces

goto www.SysInternals.com (I believe the company and its tools were recently purchased by Microsoft - Mark Russinovich and Bruce Cogwell)

Search for FileMon/Regmon
Scroll to bottom of pages
Download the Programs

0. Remote in as Admin and clear the Temp directory.

1. Save Filemon and Regmon to the PC
2. Get ready to start the SQL Express install
3. Launch open Filemon and Regmon. - To start with I recommend stopping the traces and clearing the logs (with tool bar buttons) because when you launch open the programs they quickly start tracing out Disk and Registry Activity
4. When you get very close to the problem occurring start FileMon/RegMon together - tracing out all the activity in real-time.
5. After you encounter the problem, stop the FileMon/Regmon traces
6. Zip up ALL the traces INCLUDING ALL THE SQL SETUP LOGS YOU CAN FIND - hehe and also RUN THE "mps reports" -sql flavour, on the pc - and post them online!!

Regarding the error messages link: setup.rll 2380 error, try looking in your application event log for the events leading up to the problem and cross reference them with www.EventID.net

PS the tip to analysing these Regmon/FileMon files is (off the top of my head) > Excel > Data menu > Filter item > Auto Filter item. Then select the combobox with Success, Path not found > and set it to DEVICE DATA ERROR or ACCESS DENIED & hunt down those leads!!

Installed SQLServer Express.....now what?

I've succesfully installed Visual C# and I've made a couple of example projects. I now want to try and create a database and see if I can make a C# application that talks to it.

So I've installed SQL Server Express. I was hoping I could open it up and get started with creating tables etc. Instead, my Start menu shows:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005

>>>Configuration Tools

>>>>>>SQL Server Configuration Manager

>>>>>>SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting

>>>>>>SQL Server Surface Area Configuration

Where do I go now? Is there some configuring to do before I can start making tables and storing data? Or, have I misunderstood what SQL Server is about?

For one thing, VS provides tools that allow you to create databases and then fill them with all kinds of database goodness. (i.e. Tables, Views, Stored Procedures, you name it.) They pretty much give you everything you need.

If you want to use the SQL Tools to do this, you'll need to download SQL Management Studio Express, which you can get from the SQL Express download page. Once you install SSMSE, you'll see another item on your Start menu.

I am really in a fix.I have downloaded the trial version from MIcrosoft site and run setup with named instance. But I cannot find my management console link anywhere. Can anyone help me here .

My site is : Windows XP Professional SP2

Installed : SQLServer 2005 180Day Trial Pack downloaded from Microsoft Network.

I ran setup from : server directory and also from tools directory.

In my programes menu I can only see Configuration Toolsunder which there are three options :

1) SQL Server Configuration Tool

2) SQL Server Surface Configuration Tool and

3) SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting

Is it SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition? XP SP2 does not support Enterprise edition. You need server operating systems to support Enterprise edition such as W2K SP4, W2K3 EE SP2, Longhorn Server.

I dont know . I just downloaded the server from MSDN site it was an x86 executable file . My PC is a Win XP Professional on our internal Domain .

|||What does the Splash screen tell you ? After calling the installer you should get the splah screen showing the dition type you are trying to install.

I just uninstalled everything and run the installer again . It says SQL 2005 Server but does not give anytype of edition. However now I find that the Management Console is appearing in the program menu.

1/How did you uninstall everything? I uninstalled in the wrong order from add/remove programs now I am in three quarters installed limbo. [Ghosting the machine seems the simplest way out].

2/I did not get the tools setup to work, or the sample database install in the server directory, the error message was (in both cases)
"The following components that you chose to install are already installed on the machine. To view a report of available options and alternatives click on Details."
Clicking on details was unhelpful (said to maintain components from add/remove programs)
[The components that were already installed did not mention the sample databases]

This is on Windows 2000 SP4, with sqlserver 2005 evaluation edition.

I simply went to the Add/remove programs and selected the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 , clicked remove . It asked and it simply removed it clean including the native client etc. Although the Add/Remove page still shows the name it has actually removed the product. To remove the name from the list you will have to select them one by one and click remove. It will prompt you with something like 'This program can only be used for removing installed options' Just click Ok and the entry will go away .

For the tools setup to work when you install you will get a page after the SQL support files and Native client are installed wherein you are asked to choose what you wish to install . Select both the SQL database services as well as the Client tools ( Last option on the page ) then click next .

I went add/remove [the wrong sql server component first] and the computer removed the entry in add/remove programs but left the program (mostly) intact [I had to repair .net from the add/remove programs section]

I still get the error/warning:

Maybe I was just unlucky not to choose the databases on my first install.

I can install the sample databases that have there own msi, I suppose I can create a test

Yes I managed to resolve the problem . Here is what I did

1) Went to Add/Remove programs

2) Select MS SQL Server 2005

3) Clicked on Remove ( It asked me what components I want to remove so I checked Both Database Server and Workgroup Client )

4) Then removed everything else that was MS SQL

5) Re-ran the setup file

Wala .. I had the SQL Server Management Console in the Program List.

Yesterday, to start SQLServer, I have used the DOS Command
setup SAPWD=xxx from C:\sql2ksp3\MSDE.
I think tne mix mode of authentification is correct.
But when I want to connect to the database by SQLEntMan, it doesn't work ...
How can I connect to SQLServer ?
Server adress = name of the computer
Username = ?
Password = password of windows ? password of of SAPWD ?

installation problem of SqlServer

i need to uninstall MDAC from my system. my operating system is windows2000 proffessional.

Installation problem

First time I am trying to install sql express on my computer but getting few problems. I am sure that I have uninstalled all sqlserver, net related programs from the computer (as per instructions but when I installed I am still getting the message there are few components exists).

I have used "vs_uninst_betas.exe" and found few programs still running. I dont know how to uninstall.

Please can you help?

The first option is to look in Add/Remove programs to ensure that all SQL and SQL related programs are removed. If nothing is showing, you'll need to examine the Setup logs to see which specific programs are causing problems. For each program listed, you should see a listing for the Program ID. You can manually remove the programs with the command:

msiexec.exe /x <program id>

Do this for each program listed in the setup logs. The logs are located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG for a normal install of SQL Express.

Installation error

I am trying to install SQLServer 2005 on a new Windows XP machine with SP2. Unfortuantely I get the error message "The drop location is missing file(s) that allow setup to determine how a multi instance product should be installed. Setup cannot continue, please repair the drop and try again." How do I fix this so that SQL Server can be installed?
