Installing MSDE SP3 to Win98 causes an error.
To create the installation I used the VisualStudio installer. Afte the installtion I use ORCA and edit the MSI with the following values in the property table.
ProductLanguage = 1033
SqlBlankPwd = 1
SqlSecurityMode = SQL
No special actions are being used by my installer. Yet according to MS the reason for my error is that I am using a special action with a non-c++ dll (KB Article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B306627)) . I am guessing that this is something that MS is doing. Has anyone else gotten a successful install of SP3 onto Win98? Any info would be helpful.

Ok I have an MSI file that installs an instance of the MSDE. I recently updated my install to used the SP3 MSMs of the MSDE. I have the installation working correctly on XP. However it fails rather quickly on install to Win98. I will paste the log file of the failure below.

Yes. I'm stupid. And please excuse my ignoracne.Go to run and type the following replace path and password optionally you can specify authentication mode (default is windows) SECURITYMODE=SQL.

Try reading the 'Readme' file. There you will see the instructions to include the /SAPWD switch and also include a password during installation.

- Jesse Williamsthere's a command-line swicth in the MSDE installer program for setting the SAPWD
check the readme file that came with the installer, or run this:
setup.exe /?
I can't recall the usage off the top of my head I'm afraid.|||Take a look at this as well:http://www.asp.net/msde/default.aspx?tabindex=0&tabid=1. More info on MSDE can be found on support.microsoft.com.|||I figured it out after I posted and did some research on this forum and read the read me. Correct, it is a command line switch. There are two ways to configure the installation: thru the setup.ini or at the command line. If you go with setup.ini add these parameters under [Options]:
instancename="nameofyourserver"
targetdir="C:\path"
datadir="C:\path"
securitymode=sql
targetdir is the folder that setup will install the executables for MSDE
datadir is the folder that will house the data
instancename is the name of your server instance
After saving the setup.ini return to the command prompt and type
setup /settings "setup.ini" sapwd="strongpwd"
This will allow you to set the sa password more securely.
You can also achieve the same at the command prompt instead of using the setup.ini:
setup instancename="nameofyourserver" targetdir="C:\path" datadir="C:\path" securitymode=sql sapwd="strongpwd"
Hope this helps for the future. Thanks for everyones help.

1. Regarding the error message when you install sqlserver 2005. Can you confirm the following points, cheers:
a. Operating System? (XP?)
b. OS Service Pack level? (SP2?)
c. What flavour of SQL? (Express?)
c. Is this a second instance of SQL or the default one thats failing? (first based on the registry key error?)
d. Have you logged on as local administrator, cleared the temp directory, copied the files onto to the C:\ and tried to install from harddisk?
2. Should you continue to experience problems with this machine, is it possible to test with another PC or rebuild the problematic one?
I've encountered this issue on one PC, yet I was able to install SQL Express successfully on another PC via RDP at the same site but not on another PC that was producing the error your seeing. To cut a long story short, we got onsite staff to reboot the (WinXP SP2) Pc and it started showing symptoms seen in this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;826955
"Virus alert about the Blaster worm and its variants"
3. If you can NOT get another PC to rule-out virus, hardware, media &/or etc related issues as the root cause and would like to pursue troubleshooting.. Can you please run FileMon & RegMon traces (and provide the SQL SETUP LOGS) on the PC while your installing SQL?
Based on the error message, the problem stems from "Error opening file for write: 5." and the API for GetLastError reports a Registry key is to blame: "GetLastError: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Setup." - hence the FileMon and Regmon traces are needed to aid troubleshooting,
To get a FileMon & RegMon traces
goto www.SysInternals.com (I believe the company and its tools were recently purchased by Microsoft - Mark Russinovich and Bruce Cogwell)
Search for FileMon/Regmon
Scroll to bottom of pages
Download the Programs
0. Remote in as Admin and clear the Temp directory.
1. Save Filemon and Regmon to the PC
2. Get ready to start the SQL Express install
3. Launch open Filemon and Regmon. - To start with I recommend stopping the traces and clearing the logs (with tool bar buttons) because when you launch open the programs they quickly start tracing out Disk and Registry Activity
4. When you get very close to the problem occurring start FileMon/RegMon together - tracing out all the activity in real-time.
5. After you encounter the problem, stop the FileMon/Regmon traces
6. Zip up ALL the traces INCLUDING ALL THE SQL SETUP LOGS YOU CAN FIND - hehe and also RUN THE "mps reports" -sql flavour, on the pc - and post them online!!
Regarding the error messages link: setup.rll 2380 error, try looking in your application event log for the events leading up to the problem and cross reference them with www.EventID.net
HTH
PS the tip to analysing these Regmon/FileMon files is (off the top of my head) > Excel > Data menu > Filter item > Auto Filter item. Then select the combobox with Success, Path not found > and set it to DEVICE DATA ERROR or ACCESS DENIED & hunt down those leads!!

Thanks for the reply, although I am a little late in responding. I ended up formating the disk and starting over. It worked ok then.
Thansk for the help.
|||Thanks for the update Tony,
Good move reformatting the HDD... as your dont want a production system thats potentially been corrupted.

Installation: SQL Server 2005 surface area configuration, error WI
I'm trying to install RS 2005 on my server.
First the installation is ok, to validate it I checked (as explained in the
installation guide) with "SQL Server 2005 surface area configuration", but I
have always an error when I want to validate the "windows intergated
security".
The error is: "Argument value wa not passed for the argument reporting
service URL. (Microsoft.sqlsac.public)".
Details are: "--
Program Location:
at
Microsoft.SqlSac.Public.ReportingServices.GetReportingServiceProxy(String
reportingUrl)
at Microsoft.SqlSac.Public.ReportingServices.GetSettings(String
givenInstanceName, ReportingFeature feature, String serverName)
at
Microsoft.SqlSac.MainPanel.WindowsIntegratedSecurity.GetCurrentSettings(String machineName)
at Microsoft.SqlSac.MainPanel.FormFeatures.DisplayLeaf(TreeView tree,
ETreeNode selected)
at Microsoft.SqlSac.MainPanel.FormFeatures.OnTimer(Object source,
ElapsedEventArgs eArgs)".
I don't want to continue the installation (use reporting service
configuration tool) before resolve this issue.
Thanks for your help.

There should be a sqlstp.log files in your Windows directory, you can find detailed error information in it.
