I'm getting ready to install MS SQL 2005 Enterprise Ed. on a Windows 2003
server. This server already has Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere Version 9
installed with few db running. Do you think there would be any
problems/conflicts if I install MS SQL on this machine?
My other question is what ports does MS SQL uses to connect to db?
Here are the specifications of the server:
Dell PowerEdge 2850
Dual Xeon 2.8 GHz
2 GB RAM

(1433 by default). If it's a named instance, then it'd use dynamic ports (by
default) however you can set the ports as static after installation. UDP

installing MS SQL on server with sybase ASA
I'm getting ready to install MS SQL 2005 Enterprise Ed. on a Windows 2003

Installing Enterprise version over Standard
We currently are running one instance of SQL Server 2000 Standard with a few databases. We need to upgrade to Enterprise version to use data cubes. Should we be able to install right over the top of our current instance of SQL Server or will we have to
create a new instance?

directly.
Steps from boks online:-
How to perform an edition upgrade within SQL Server 2000 (Setup)
To upgrade a SQL Server 2000 installation to a different edition of SQL
Server 2000
1.. Insert the Microsoft SQL Server 2000T compact disc for the edition
you want to install into your CD-ROM drive. If the compact disc does not
autorun, double-click Autorun.exe in the root directory of the compact disc.
2.. Select SQL Server 2000 Components, select Install Database Server, and
then setup prepares the SQL Server Installation Wizard. At the Welcome
screen, click Next.
3.. In Computer Name dialog box, select Local Computer or Remote computer.
4.. In the Installation Selection dialog box, click Upgrade, Remove, or
Add Components to an existing instance of SQL Server, and then click Next.
5.. In the Instance Name dialog box, click Next.
6.. In the Existing Installation dialog box, click Upgrade your existing
installation, and then click Next.
7.. If Setup detects that you are doing an edition upgrade, the Upgrade

To upgrade a SQL Server 2000 installation to a different edition of SQL

1.. Insert the Microsoft® SQL Server 2000T compact disc for the edition
you want to install into your CD-ROM drive. If the compact disc does not
autorun, double-click Autorun.exe in the root directory of the compact disc.
2.. Select SQL Server 2000 Components, select Install Database Server, and
then setup prepares the SQL Server Installation Wizard. At the Welcome
screen, click Next.
3.. In Computer Name dialog box, select Local Computer or Remote computer.
4.. In the Installation Selection dialog box, click Upgrade, Remove, or

Installing Client Tools
I recently installed an evaluation copy of SQL Server (Enterprise x64 edition). What's the proper way to load the management and analytical tools onto client machines? There are 2 separate problems:
1. The 64 bit program only comes with 64 bit tools. (Should I just download the 32 bit evaluation copy? Will the tools expire in 180 days on all the client machines?)
2. What are the licensing rules? Surely I am allowed to load client tools (but not the server itself) onto client devices. Is that right?

I would also ask you to refer to the local Microsoft support for more information on licensing, as x64 is bit new in recent times.

I have SQL SEVERVER 2000 ENTERPRISE EDITION (with sp3a) ON o/s 2003
I tried to install SQL SERVER REPORTING EVAL downloded from MS site.
(pending CD from retailer)
During the installation it tested for prerequisites and has thrown message
saying IIS is not installed or neither configured for rs.
But when I open .net report wizard etc are working fine. I can preview
report in .net
again Problem is when i tried to deploy it , it is saying reporting server
is not available.
I unistalled it and again checked while installing
I found the following:
again same problem related to IIS. ( I checked again ASP.NET ETC are
installed properly)
while installing it is not showing server componets and Report manager. It
is just showing client components. Does'nt eval edit have reporting server.
I dont know what to do at this

prerequisites on your machine. The install should show the server
components. I used the evaluation edition for a couple of months so I know
for a fact it has everything.

It is working fine.
Is there any way to store snapshots automatically to database instead of a
folder.

Actually I unistalled IIS and installed again . Now I can see serve componets.
It is working fine.
Is there any way to store snapshots automatically to database instead of a
folder.

Installed SQL2005: now can't access SQL2000 (Local) in EM
After installing SQL2005 (with a new instance), I couldn't access my previous
(local) server through Enterprise Mnager, although I can access it through
Query Analyser.
I deleted the connection in Enterprise manager and tried to recreate it
(using either windows security or SQL Autentication): get the message 'Client
unable to establish connection. TCP Provider: No connection could be made
because the target machine actively refused it.'

Earlier versions of SQL Server 2005 had a tendancy to trash the SQL Server
2000 tools, perhaps this is your issue. I always put SQL 2005 into a virtual
machine and will keep it there until it RTMs, unless I can install it on a
fresh machine without SQL Server 2000 on.

installed the configuration tools menu in start > programs. But i cannot
find enterprise manager. am i missing something?
Also, am i rightin saying that SQL 7 & SQL 2000 Server cannot be installed
on windows XP Pro, BUT SQL 2005 can be installed on XP Pro? (im talking
about the actual server software, not the client tools).

Windows XP. Standard and Enterprise Editions are not.
SQL Server Management Studio is the replacement for Enterprise Manager. If
it is not there, it means you did not select it during the install.

SQL Server 7.0 is not supported on Windows XP
SQL Server 2000 and 2005, developer and personal editions are installable on
Windows XP. Standard and Enterprise Editions are not.
SQL Server Management Studio is the replacement for Enterprise Manager. If
it is not there, it means you did not select it during the install.
SQL Server 2005 Express does not ship with a UI until 2006.

SQL 2000 Developer and Evaluation editions can be installed on XP but not
Standard or Enterprise. SQL 2005 Developer, Express and Workgroup editions

missing. So I went into Configuration Manager since it sounded similar and

throw us curveballs. I think MS should recognize that everyone is busy and

Well, maybe RTM is a good thing b/c it keep us IT people in a job! Well,

evolve, then don't bother upgrading beyond v1.0.

Since you already have the server installed, then open the CD, go to the
tools folder, run setup.exe, and when you get to the screen that asks which
components you want to install, slow down. First you'll go through these
steps:
(a) check "I accept the licensing terms and conditions"
(b) hit " Next > "
(c) wait for prerequisites to be installed (yes it will have to do this
every time)
(d) hit " Next > "
Now you will be at "Welcome to the Microsoft SQL Server Installation Wizard.
(a) hit " Next > "
(b) as long as you don't have any errors on the config check, hit " Next > "
(c) enter your name and company (or leave blank if desired)
(d) hit " Next > "
(e) on the feature selection page, expand Client Components
(f) I would select Connectivity Components and Management Tools (you may
choose others if you wish)
(to select a component, you click on the down arrow next to a component,
and choose "Will be installed on local hard drive")
(g) if you want sample database and/or Books Online, expand the
Documentation, Samples... node

did you read "ReadmeSQL2005.htm" and setup instructions, and pay attention

To be honest back, I never read ReadmeSQL2005.htm. I never RTM at all, I
simply expect the products to have the same tools in the same places as the
previous versions. We're all too busy in this life to have company software
throw us curveballs. I think MS should recognize that everyone is busy and
have products be intuitive enough to the point where you don't have to RTM.
Well, maybe RTM is a good thing b/c it keep us IT people in a job! Well,
it's off to the manual and this thing now. :)

I installed the SQL2005, but cannot find the management tools like
Enterprise Manager in 2000
During Installation, i selected advanced
and select to install
all in Database Service,
all in Client Components and
the SQL BOL in Documentation, Sample, and Sample Database.
But after the installation complete, I cannot locate the SQL Management
Studio
In my program list, it only has
SQL Server 2005\Configuration Tools
SQL Server 2005\Documentation and Tutorials
I checked the Add/Remove Program in Control Panel, it show followings are
installed
MS SQL Server 2005
MS SQL Server 2005 Backward compatibility
MS SQL Server 2005 BOL (English)
MS SQL Server Natvie Client
MS SQL Server Setup Support Files
MS SQL Server VSS Writer
but no any manager tools.
I tried to insert to dvd again and select to install the Client Component
but the wizard said the component i choose is already installed.
So what is the problem?
P.S. OS WinXP SP2

However, under SQL Server 2005 program group, all I have is Configuration
Tools.
What happened to Query Analyzer, Enterprise Manager, etc?

I have encountered this problem before but not on the eval, it is related to
the windows installer. If you perform a manual install from the tools folder
on the installation cd you will have the management tools available.
