Installing Database
My client is US based. Now I want to send them the database script for the package installation. Client does'nt have any technical people. So all I have to do it remotely from India. So could any one guide me on this?
thnxWhat exactly is the problem. Either you can ask them to install by sending the database scripts, or ask them to install a remote server and connect from India remotely. In case of remote connection, they have to open up their server ports to skip the firewall. Then you can connect from India and do everything yourself.|||Could you please come up with a more clear picture, on remote connection and opening the port................?
thnx|||You can install MS Remote Desktop Connection software in your computer and connect to the sql server remotely. For that, you have to ask your client to open you the sql server, http and ftp ports to you.|||They would be crazy to open up ports on their SQL Servers though for you to work on it remotely from India. Just make a backup of a database with only the data needed. They can just restore the database on their SQL Server as part of the installation process. The alternative is to give them a script that creates the database, users, tables, stored procs, etc. and inserts the data needed. That's more prone to error though and harder to troubleshoot.
This is pretty standard practice and you should probably know this if you are going to be distributing commercial applications that utilize SQL Server. You might want to hire a DBA or look at consulting services for your company.|||yup, hire me!
Installing Client Tools
1. The 64 bit program only comes with 64 bit tools. (Should I just download the 32 bit evaluation copy? Will the tools expire in 180 days on all the client machines?)
2. What are the licensing rules? Surely I am allowed to load client tools (but not the server itself) onto client devices. Is that right?
Thanks!Evaulation edition expiration only applicable to server components whereby you cannot use the server services, but for client tools I haven't seen such problem you can use them to connect to other SQL server instances.|||That's very helpful - thank you.
It would also be nice to know what the licensing rules actually are & what the best practice is supposed to be.|||Refer to this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/257716 page that clears about licensing policy on client tools, though it is for SQL 2000 all the information is still applicable to SQL 2005 in this case. I would also ask you to refer to the local Microsoft support for more information on licensing, as x64 is bit new in recent times.
Installing client components
No problem -- I was able to install it on our server -- it recognized that we had a qualifying SQL Server installation, and installed Reporting Service.
I wanted to install the client components both on my laptop and my development computer at work, but I was wondering how it would know I was entitled to install, since the qualifying database was on a remote machine. Well, there was no problem on my laptop -- it installed OK. I guess it found what it was looking for.
Now I am trying to install it on my computer at work, and now it is asking for a 25-character product key. Well, the CD did not come with a product key. I was not asked to enter a product key on my laptop.
What is going on here,. anyone know?
I am more than fed up with this product .. but we have to use it.
Good Evening!
You have a least received the CD - I subscribed well over 2 months ago and then again last month and have never received the CD - even though I am in Bangkok and was chaged for shipment....
So since we installed SQL 2005 here I thought I could "backload" the RS in SQL 2005 to SQL 2000 - but forget that - won't happen at least I have not figured out a way after an entire weekend. I was really psyched-up offering the calendar conrols in RS 2005 or (Business Intellingence) to our current users - but when you move an solution project to BI or RS 2005 it converts the RDL and you cannot back-load.
I don't know - but did you try to enter your SQL 2000 key when prompted - because it is 25 bytes long ? I would try that and see what happens... But you would think OK - so I enter a 25 byte key when prompted from the CD of RS - how does the RS CD know if the Key is valid - does it synch with the server?
I am curious how this is resolved - so if you do resolve - will you post back?
Best regards,
Joe
|||Well, I can't enter the SQL 2000 key, because I don't have it. We got our SQL Server through the hosting company from whom we rent the dedicated server, so they are the ones that installed it. I did ask them for the key, but they did not want to give it to me.
However, I did find a solution - I installed the SQL Server Developer Edition on my development computer. You know, this is the one that only costs about $50. You can only use it for development, but it is a full version.
When I tried installing Reporting Service after that, it did not ask me for the product key, and it installed successfully. Apparently, it just wants to see a full version of SQL Server.|||Cool!
Just wondering - in ADD or Remove Programs did the CD version of RS install as Microsoft SQL 2000 Reporting Services or Microsoft SQL 2000 Reporting Services Evaluation Edition?
So I wonder why MS makes such a big deal out of getting the production version of RS - especially sinice RS production version only looks for a installed version of SQL because you obviously have two(2) different "keys"
One with the Development Edition
and One for your Server
Interesting!

joe

Installed client tools but they don't show up in VS.Net
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.sqlserver.reportingsvcs/browse_thread/thread/7fcbd1e9109b9b4b/67a26738d8cd2126?q=install+client+vs.net,
when I install the client components of SQL Reporting Services, the add-ins
should automatically be added to VS.Net. I've tried it several times, but the
add-ins don't show up.
How can I add these? I see the components on my hard drive (C:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Report Designer) but there is nothing in
the RS help about adding them - it assumes that the install takes care of
that.
TIA!In VS.NET, select File > New > Blank Solution
Then, do you see Business Intelligence Projects among your choices?

installation Problem
Hi folks,
Let me tell you about my problem. My client is in U.S.A. They have a web data base server (SQL SERVER) some where in U.S.A itself. I have to make the application in ASP. So now I'm not getting how to make a installer which will autometically register th DLLs at the server, make the virtual direstory of my application, run the data base script. and restore the backup file? It'll be a great help, if any one of you can help me out in this regard.
Thanking you.You could outsource that to the United States. :) Otherwise, have you looked at www.asp.net for installation package? I think you'll find what you need there.

This is by design.
Windows NT 4.0 workstation, Windows 2000 professional and Windows XP home
and professional editions do not support a remote server install.
You need a server edition installation to do a remote install.

installation of SQL Server 2005 CTP (June) error 2147944003
During installation of SQL Server 2005 CTP (June) I get the error 2147944003.
This error refers to the installation of tools (client components).
The server components seem to be ok., services are running.
My os is Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600).
Could anybody help me, please?

The checker says:
WBG5 : The current system does not meet minimum hardware requirements for this SQL Server release.
For detailed hardware requirements, see the readme file or SQL Server Books Online.
WBG5 : Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is either not installed or is disabled. IIS is
required by some SQL Server features...
I did prove the requirements. Okay, IIS is not installed, but that can't be the reason.
Any chance you have SQL 2005 Express Edition installed? If so, this should help:http://blogs.msdn.com/jpapiez/archive/2005/11/14/492534.aspx
jeff.|||Thank you for your help, but that doesn't work.
I have no express edition installed.
The only MS SQL Client-Software I have installed is the native client of my CTP.
Do you still have another idea?|||Search SQLSetup0006_WBG5_Tools.log for "Value 3". This will put you at the location of the log file that has the actual failure information. I doubt this has anything to do with IIS. Post that failure section back here.
Dan|||Thank you for this - it helped.
I could see that it is a space problem on C-partition.
Stupid that you cannot decide another partition.
So I removed some other programs from C - and the installation was successful!

Enterprise Edition runs on server operating systems only. That is,
Windows 2003 or Windows 2000 Server.
To have a local database on your workstation, you need to install either
Developer Edition or Personal Edition. Of these Developer Edition is
surely the better choice, as it has all the features of Enterprise
Edition. It's just the licensing which is different.

I have a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition (Reporting Services) CD.
Am I missing something or do simply have the wrong CD?
