I've MS SQL Server 6.5 installed in my Windows 2000 machine. Is it possible to install MS SQL Server 2000 personal or standard edition in the same machine without upgrading or removing the old SQL Server 6,5 ?

Installing Enterprise version over Standard
create a new instance?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Hi,
You can upgrade the SQL Server standard to SQL server enterprise edition
directly.
Steps from boks online:-
How to perform an edition upgrade within SQL Server 2000 (Setup)
To upgrade a SQL Server 2000 installation to a different edition of SQL
Server 2000
1.. Insert the Microsoft SQL Server 2000T compact disc for the edition
you want to install into your CD-ROM drive. If the compact disc does not
autorun, double-click Autorun.exe in the root directory of the compact disc.
2.. Select SQL Server 2000 Components, select Install Database Server, and
then setup prepares the SQL Server Installation Wizard. At the Welcome
screen, click Next.
3.. In Computer Name dialog box, select Local Computer or Remote computer.
4.. In the Installation Selection dialog box, click Upgrade, Remove, or
Add Components to an existing instance of SQL Server, and then click Next.
5.. In the Instance Name dialog box, click Next.
6.. In the Existing Installation dialog box, click Upgrade your existing
installation, and then click Next.
7.. If Setup detects that you are doing an edition upgrade, the Upgrade
dialog box appears. Click Yes, Upgrade my <text specific to the upgrade> to
upgrade the feature set of your current installation, and click Next.
8.. After the upgrade is completed, you are prompted as to whether you
want to install additional components. If you click Yes, the Select
Components dialog box appears. Accept the defaults or select the additional
components you want to install, and then click Next.
You can select an item in the Components list, and then select items from
the related Sub-Components list. Click to select items you want to install;
clear the check box of the items you do not want to install.
9.. When you are finished specifying options, in the Start Copying Files
dialog box, click Next.
10.. In the Setup Complete dialog box, click Yes, I want to restart my
computer now, and then click Finish to complete the edition upgrade.
Thanks

Installing client components
No problem -- I was able to install it on our server -- it recognized that we had a qualifying SQL Server installation, and installed Reporting Service.
I wanted to install the client components both on my laptop and my development computer at work, but I was wondering how it would know I was entitled to install, since the qualifying database was on a remote machine. Well, there was no problem on my laptop -- it installed OK. I guess it found what it was looking for.
Now I am trying to install it on my computer at work, and now it is asking for a 25-character product key. Well, the CD did not come with a product key. I was not asked to enter a product key on my laptop.
What is going on here,. anyone know?
I am more than fed up with this product .. but we have to use it.
Good Evening!
You have a least received the CD - I subscribed well over 2 months ago and then again last month and have never received the CD - even though I am in Bangkok and was chaged for shipment....
So since we installed SQL 2005 here I thought I could "backload" the RS in SQL 2005 to SQL 2000 - but forget that - won't happen at least I have not figured out a way after an entire weekend. I was really psyched-up offering the calendar conrols in RS 2005 or (Business Intellingence) to our current users - but when you move an solution project to BI or RS 2005 it converts the RDL and you cannot back-load.
I don't know - but did you try to enter your SQL 2000 key when prompted - because it is 25 bytes long ? I would try that and see what happens... But you would think OK - so I enter a 25 byte key when prompted from the CD of RS - how does the RS CD know if the Key is valid - does it synch with the server?
I am curious how this is resolved - so if you do resolve - will you post back?
Best regards,
Joe
|||Well, I can't enter the SQL 2000 key, because I don't have it. We got our SQL Server through the hosting company from whom we rent the dedicated server, so they are the ones that installed it. I did ask them for the key, but they did not want to give it to me.
However, I did find a solution - I installed the SQL Server Developer Edition on my development computer. You know, this is the one that only costs about $50. You can only use it for development, but it is a full version.
When I tried installing Reporting Service after that, it did not ask me for the product key, and it installed successfully. Apparently, it just wants to see a full version of SQL Server.|||Cool!
Just wondering - in ADD or Remove Programs did the CD version of RS install as Microsoft SQL 2000 Reporting Services or Microsoft SQL 2000 Reporting Services Evaluation Edition?
So I wonder why MS makes such a big deal out of getting the production version of RS - especially sinice RS production version only looks for a installed version of SQL because you obviously have two(2) different "keys"
One with the Development Edition
and One for your Server
Interesting!
Best Regards,
joe

Installing A Default Instance AFTER a Named Instance??
It is a Production Server with 3 NAMED Instances and NO Default Instance.
Does anyone know if I can rerun the SQL Server Install and add a DEFAULT Instance to this box without disrupting the other Named Instances?Except for a reboot after the install, you should have no problems installing a default instance.|||Thank you : )|||Will the default instance automatically have the name of the Server - or is there a way to give it name - like you would a named instance.. sorry if the question sounds stupid.. : )|||The default instance will have the name of the server. The only way around this that I can think of off the top of my head is to give the machine a DNS alias.|||Thanks !!! I'm not so much worried about the name as I am Blowing up the Server by installing a Default Instance AFTER it has already been populated with Named Instances.
Installing
Absolute newbie in reporting services...
Have a server with a SQL 2005 Standard Installation (version 9.00.1399.06) -
and now I've been asked to check if reporting services are installed - How
can I see this - and if its not there how do I install it ?Go to Control Panel, open "Services" applet, if there is "ReportServer"
service running, then, most likely, RS is installed on this vbox. Or go to
IIS manager, underneath Website, if you can see virtual folder "Reports" and
"ReportServer" (or Reports$ServerInstanceName and
ReportServer$ServerInstanceName), then, RS is installed.
RS can be installed on a computer where no SQL Server itself is installed.
However, it requires IIS. To installed it, simply place CD/DVD into drive
and in the installation wizard, make sure you select Reporting Services. You
may need to plann ahead for the user accounts used by RS: RS uses different
accounts for the service and data source access. You'd better plan ahead
according to your needs. RS is also an ASP.NET application, which has its
own security configuration that you need to plan well before hand.

Installation woes
I am attempting to install RS onto the following machine:
Win2k3 Domain Controller
SQL Standard
I have installed RS successfully, however at the end of the installation it
instructs me that it could not be activated.
I run rsactivate without success...
When I type http://ipaddress/reports I recieve an error Http 404 file not
found...
What have I done wrong?
Cheers

Here is what I would have attempted with my knowledge.
1. Check that the virtual directory exists in IIS.
2. The default page on the Reports directory is called Home.aspx, ensure it
is there.
From your example try http://ipaddress/reports/Home.aspx
3. Maybe IIS is blocking aspx pages, so put "aaa.htm" and a "aaa.txt" on the
virtual directory, see if you can get to them.
4. Create a test virtual directory, allow anonymous access, and put some
test pages there, txt, htm, aspx and see if you can get to them. Take the
anonymous access off, see what happens.

1. The virtual directory exists
2. The page is there and is accessable
3. Following the "Instructions" you pointed to in your previous post I
shouldn't need to do anything when installing on a brand new Win2k3 Domain
Controller, however I thought along these lines also before coming up empty.
4. I am running other Web applications fine off the server. CRM for one.
The whole reason I posted here was that I had exhausted all avenues. I
appreciate the time you have put into this.
Any other ideas anyone? I am at a loss here, I have installed RS
successfully many times on Win2k, this is my first experience with Win2k3.
I am leaning towards CRM having something to do with it. I will continue
the search for answers.

SSL is not necessary, but as your error talks about certificates it is one
of the most likely uses for them.
Has this media been used to install on any other machines?

It may be worth trying to install on another pc to see if the error occurs,
or possibly download the non-iso version.

Installation of SQL Server 2005 + RS on a vista 64 bits
Hello,
I'm trying to install a version of SQL server 2005 with reporting services on a vista 64 bits.
I've a licence for SQL server 2005 standard edition in French, my vista is in French, and I'm using visual studio standard edition in English to develop. I would like to develop reports using SQL server to include these reports in my applications developped with Visual Studio.
Wich version of SQL server should I install ? I've tryed to install SQL server express 2005 with advanced feature SP2 (english version) and then later the standard edition (French version) (each time uninstalling all SQL server components between tries), but I got problems with reporting services each time.
I got first a warming saying than reporting services is 32 bits and IIS is 64 bits, I so allowed IIS to run 32 bits ASP .Net, but after that, I now get a problem of .Net registration in IIS as warming message on the line concerning Reporting services during the install of SQL Server, and it doesn't even offer to install RS on the next window.
I reinstalled the DotnetFX64 to be sure, but still get the same message. If I look in the IIS the application pools are looking me to be normal, with the ASPNET 32 bit code allowed.
Are you installing 32-bit SQL Server 2005 Standard on 64-bit Vista? Can you install 64-bit SQL Server 2005?
Vista is a client operating system and it does support all SQL Server 2005 editions except Enterprise edition. So SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and SQL Server 2005 Express should be supported on Vista.
By default, IIS is not turned on Vista. When you turn on IIS on Vista, please make sure you als select "IIS Backward Compatibility". Otherwise, RS cannot be installed successfully.
|||I tried to install first SQL express with advanced services, then the 64 bits version SQL server standar edition, but it looks like it still was trying to install the reporting services in 32 bits mode.
I've well installed the IIS backward compatibility, indeed.
I just made a new try, and here are the warming I'm getting now, and I can't select reporting services in the list (sorry, the warmings are in French) :
- Critère d'enregistrement de version ASP.Net (Avertissement)
Messages

I've again tried to install the standard edition in French.
Reporting services were still not installing, still complaining about the registration of ASP.net in IIS. I then tried to apply the SP2, and it didn't install at all, complaining than some part of SQL server (like the management studio) where in 32 bits. In the end, all points of the SP2 updates failed. Visual Studio 2005 was then starting to act up (problems to access some log file when I was starting or leaving Visual Studio).
Then I've uninstalled all sql server again. Visual Studio was then completely messy (problems with the components in the tool box, problems with refactor for visual basic, Ideablde Dev Force, Kripton Toolkit, ...) So I also uninstalled Visual Studio 2005 and all these related components.
After that, I used the Windows installer cleaner utility to clean my system (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/290301/en-us).

Why would MS release an operating system that does not support all of their current applications?!!!

How can I now mannage to reinstall my products, in wich order and in wich version, to be able in the end to develop my applications and reports, knowing than I've licence for Vista Professional edition, in French; and installed it in 64 bits, I've licence for SQL server 2005 standard edition, in French too and licence for Visual Studio 2005 Standard edition, in English ?
|||Am I really the first one trying to develop on a Vista 64 bits using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL server 2005 ?|||I'm having exactly the same problems as you (except in English!)
When I try to install Reporting Services on my Vista x64 machine, the following happens:
* In the System Configuration Check, there is a "ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement" warning.
* On the following section, Reporting Services is greyed out so cannot be installed.
All of the blogs and posts on this matter suggest going into "Turn Windows Features on / off" and enabling various IIS7 features. However, even though I have ticked every possible IIS7 feature the problem remained.
I have also installed SP2, but again this didn't help when I returned to the original installation.
What is the solution?

I have exactly the same problem installing SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 or SP2 on a Vista Ultimate 64 bits with all IIS7 features enabled: RS cannot install because I have registered the 64 bits version of ASP.NET.
I also use VS 2005 which I have it installed on my system.
Bye.
|||Well, at least, I know now than I am not the only one having the problem, and so than it is probably not related to a mistake I could have done ...|||I'm another frustrated developer trying to figure out the magic combination of steps required to install both Visual Studio 2005 Professional and SQL Server 2005 Standard on my Windows Vista Ultimate 64 machine.
Would love to hear a solution. I've also posted on the following thread earlier:

Im not a programmer/developer or anything but i have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 onto my laptop (Vista Ultimate 64) pretty much all day.
Could it have something to do with the fact that because we are using a 64bit operating system, we cannot install the 32bit version of .NET?
Im sure after installing Vista 64 i tried to update .NET 2 using the 32bit version and was told i needed the 64bit version.
SQL Server 2005 Express Setup is 32bit, so its looking for software we cannot install right?
Then again i may be totally wrong ..... i dunno, i just dont want to have to format my laptop to reinstall XP or Vista 32
Finally! I know WHY I cannot get the enterprise version of SQL to download on Vista. Thank you!
I have been trying desperately for the past 2 days because of an onlne class that I am taking. I will try the Standard edition of SQL. Please keep your fingers crossed for me...
Thanks again, I have been SO frustrated!

I do not expect any kind of an answer to the following question, but I have to ask it...
Why would MS release an operating system that does not support all of their current applications?!!!
