installing MSDE

here's the problems I'm having with MSDE:
I install MSDE SP3a with my application using InstallShield. The problem is that not everything is installed, because after I'm prompted for reboot, the database starts up, everything ok, right?
No, because when I run some scripts we have created to access the database, this dialog pops up like it needs to install more stuff for MSDE. It starts "configuring MSDE" and looks for the installer package and begins installing more stuff. What is it i
nstalling?
I'm guessing it has to do with some lines in the scripts that aren't quite supported or that require something that the standard distro doesn't install by default. Any ideas on tracking this down? Will this "installer" start when the line is executed in
my vb.net code or will it start when the vb.net code is started and it realizes it needs more stuff? Is there a way to install everything by default to avoid this?
Thanks,
Jacob

Installing A Default Instance AFTER a Named Instance??

I have SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition (sp3a) running on a windows 2003 (sp4) Server.

It is a Production Server with 3 NAMED Instances and NO Default Instance.

Does anyone know if I can rerun the SQL Server Install and add a DEFAULT Instance to this box without disrupting the other Named Instances?Except for a reboot after the install, you should have no problems installing a default instance.|||Thank you : )|||Will the default instance automatically have the name of the Server - or is there a way to give it name - like you would a named instance.. sorry if the question sounds stupid.. : )|||The default instance will have the name of the server. The only way around this that I can think of off the top of my head is to give the machine a DNS alias.|||Thanks !!! I'm not so much worried about the name as I am Blowing up the Server by installing a Default Instance AFTER it has already been populated with Named Instances.

Installing a cluster on an existing instance of SQL 2000 SP3A

I have been "tapped" to install a passive node on an instance of SQL
that is not currently configured for clustering on a W2003. Can I
simply install clustering services on the current production instance,
then install a new instance on what would be the passive node? Then add
it via cluster admin?
Can I run cluster communications, heartbeat, etc on the public NICs..I
do not have two interfaces on each server.
Any information would be greatly appreciated as I have only done new
deployments and this being a prod server I do not want to try the trial
and error approach.
Thanks,
Hulicat
You can use the current active node as a cluster member. You can then
install a clustered instance of SQL and migrate the databases. The final
step is to turn off the original instance. Possible, Yes. Recommended, NO.
This entire project sounds like a low-availability solution. You are
reusing equipment instead of purchasing a certified cluster configuration.
The one-NIC cluster is possible but falls into the "worst practices"
category. Not having a test platform, even a virtual one, is asking for
even more trouble.
Clustering is a hardware and systems tool to help achieve increased system
availability. Shortcutting the hardware and the procedures will result in
lower availability rather than higher availability.

I am going tp lobby for new hardware or scratch the idea.

Installatuin Problems

Hi
I have SQL SEVERVER 2000 ENTERPRISE EDITION (with sp3a) ON o/s 2003
I tried to install SQL SERVER REPORTING EVAL downloded from MS site.
(pending CD from retailer)
During the installation it tested for prerequisites and has thrown message
saying IIS is not installed or neither configured for rs.
But when I open .net report wizard etc are working fine. I can preview
report in .net
again Problem is when i tried to deploy it , it is saying reporting server
is not available.
I unistalled it and again checked while installing
I found the following:
again same problem related to IIS. ( I checked again ASP.NET ETC are
installed properly)
while installing it is not showing server componets and Report manager. It
is just showing client components. Does'nt eval edit have reporting server.
I dont know what to do at this
ANY HELP
Thanks in advance
R.DRS requires IIS with Dotnet 1.1 installed. Something is not right with the
prerequisites on your machine. The install should show the server
components. I used the evaluation edition for a couple of months so I know
for a fact it has everything.

Actually I unistalled IIS and installed again . Now I can see serve componets.
It is working fine.
Is there any way to store snapshots automatically to database instead of a
folder.

installed sp3a but @@version still says sp2

Ran the sp3a (setup.bat) on server from G:\ then MSSQL is

I checked all, .net 2003 is installed, still problem persists.
Should I unistall IIS server and install again with all pre-requisites.

Actually I unistalled IIS and installed again . Now I can see serve componets.
It is working fine.
Is there any way to store snapshots automatically to database instead of a
folder.
Thanks

Installation of SQL sp3a on Windows 2003 ent Failover Clustering

Platform: Windows 2003 ent failover cluster SQL Server 2k ent
We did installation of SQL Server 2k ent successfully. We are using Mixed
mode which allow both NT and SQL authentication. We assigned sa password. We
are able to start/stop/start SQL servrices. We are able to failover to
another node on SQL server. Right after completed SQL Server 2k ent
installation, we started to apply SP3a. But we got error in middle of serivce
pack: Setup was unable to verify the state of the server for an upgrade.
Verify the server is able to start and that you provide a valid sa password
and restart setup. We followed the instruction on article ID 330022 and
readme come with CD but it still doesn't work.
I also referenced the article http://support.microsoft.com/?id=814844 but
they are not really applied to our case. Our platform is on WINDOWS 2003.
We are implementing Failover Clustering. Our MDAC is 2.8 version above. We
didn't have any problem to install sql sp3a on any other win2k or win2k3 ent
platform. Only this time is Windows 2003 ent FAILOVER CLUSTERING.
Look at
PRB: Installation of a named instance of SQL Server 2000 virtual server on a
Windows 2003-based cluster fails
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;815431
The aliases have to stay in place until SP3a is complete.

Installation of MSDE after Microsoft BCM or Microsoft CRM

Hi,
I'm having some problems getting MSDE (SP3a) to install on machines that
already have BCM or CRM installed. The installation rolls back when it nears
the end. I have searched for an answer to this but cannot seem to find one
anywhere. If the install happens the other way round (i.e. MSDE first then
BCM which installs it's own instance) then there is no problem. Am I missing
a particular switch to make this work?
Thanks in advance for your help.

try adding the
/L*v "c:\MsdeLog.txt"
parameter to the setup.exe paramenter collections, in order to enable
verbose logging of the installation process...
you can then inspect the resulting text file for
RETURN VALUE 3
entries, indicating troubles, and about 10/15 lines befor each entry some
(sometime cryptic) description of the problem will be reported..

This has allowed me to install successfully.

Installation Issue

I have a test server that is a domain controller.
It is running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise.
Running SQL Server 2000 Enterprise with SP3a and hotfix 859.
I installed Reporting Services successfully.
Due to machine configuration changes, I uninstalled reporting services.
I have not been able to put it back on - its really strange - I get the
dialog box that says it successfully installed the SQL Server Reporting
Services Setup Support Files. When I click the Next button nothing happens.
If I reboot the machine and log back in as Administrator, I get the Error
Report dialog:
SQL Server Setup encountered an error and needed to close.
Of course, I choose "Send" to send the error report.
What I would like to do is generate an install log, to see why it is dying.
Can anyone tell me what command-line switch I can use to pass to the
setup.exe to put the log file, say on the c:\msi.log location?

I used this:
Setup.exe /lfarmviewcup c:\setupmsi.log
Any other suggestions?

Installation Fails -> need sp3a but there's a sp4??

I installed RS developer edition on windows 2000 with sp4.
Also there's SQL 2000 with sp4.
During the installation where missing:
1)VS 2003
2)Authz.dll
I installed it without those things.I download the Authz.dll and add it 2
system32 and Reinstalled the RS but somewhere in the middle there was error
that Reporting services requier sql 2000 with sp3a but i have sp4!!!
What 2 do?well the solution was as expected with microsoft products:
Remove sp4 and install it again.
