Installing MSDTC Resource after installing SQL Server 2000 cluster

Is it possible to install and configure the MSDTC resource in a SQL Server 2000 cluster after SQL is installed and running?

When I recently went through a rebuild of my cluster, I forgot to install the resource before installing SQL Server. Now, if I install and bring online the MSDTC resource the SQL disk groups will not fail over correctly. The SQL Server resource will not come online.

Thanks in advance for any help. I would really like to avoid rebuilding again.

I am not an expert on clusters but you might want to check out the following article

installing management studio on a cluster

Hi,
I am installing sql 2005 on a two node cluster. I have managed to complete
the installation and then wanted to add the sql management studio on to the
cluster. I installed disk two and chose the support tools but have way
through the installation it failed with the following error:
Failed to install and configure assemblies C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\90\NotificationServices\9.0.242\Bin\microso ft.sqlserver.notificationservices.dll in the COM+ catalog. Error: -2146233087
Error message: Unknown error 0x80131501
Error description: The Transaction Manager is not available. (Exception from
HRESULT: 0x8004D01B)
I was installing this on the first node which had ownership of the shared
disks
Any ideas
Looks like you need to install a clustered instance of MSDTC.

Installing cluster in Windows 2000 + 2003

I have a Windows 2000 that crashed and was part of a active/active SQL cluster (SQL 2000).
Instead of reinstall the box with Windows 2000, I reinstalled it with Windows 2003 Advanced.
In Cluster Administrator (on the Windows 2003 box), I am trying to add the node, and I always get the following error:
- sql1: The list of nodes to configure is empty.
- Error 0x800713ac: A cluster node is not available for this operation.
here's the content of the log:

|||Paul,
As the log indicates try adding the new node (SQL1) after cleaning it up
using the "cluster node /forcecleanup" command.

This node will be skipped and no further tasks will be performed on

Hope this helps.

Installing a Second Instance

Hi,
I'm trying to install a 2nd instance on a cluster.
We've setup two cluster groups C101TC001 and C101TC002, one for each instance.
I've stopped all the services and managed to get the installation to run,
but it won't allow me to apply the Service Pack (3a).
It reports an error
An error has occurred while creating virtual resources for clustering. Can
not create a file when that file already exists.
This then invalidates the instance.
Can anyone assist?
Thanks
Bev
After this I'm unable to get the instance registered or even started.
The error message that you got can be due to various reasons. Here is one Microsoft Knowledge base articles that has the same error (but as I said you may be having a
different issue)
BUG: The Setup program of SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2 or a later version may stop responding in a Windows clustering environment if there is an offline database
http://support.microsoft.com/default...B;EN-US;320524
This KB says the cause is "This problem occurs because Setup program cannot access the database.
During installation in a Windows Clustering environment, Setup program must query the user databases to make sure that all the database files are on disk resources that
have the correct dependencies and the virtual SQL Server resource. The virtual SQL Server resource is required for the failover support. When a database is offline, Setup
program cannot access the database. "
I understand you are installing SP3a and the above KB is for SP2 but one can still get similar error message.
You last point stated that "After this I'm unable to get the instance registered or even started." I think you will need to first concentrate on why this instance is not starting.
Anyways to be able to apply SP3a, the sql instance needs to be running. So, need to troubleshoot why this instance is not coming online. See what errors you get when
you try to being this SQL Server resource online. Try starting it from command promt and see if that works outside the cluster. The errors in SQL Errorlog, NT App, System
logs and cluster.log should be helpful to troubleshoot this further.

Installing a Named SQL Instance

I am migrating a SQL Instance to an existing SQL 2000 cluster that already
has the default instance installed. There is a large user community that
will be accessing the databases in the 2nd instance and I am trying to find a
way to configure the installation so that they can continue to use the same
ODBC connections. Today, they are configured using a single name (such as
RAVEN). Is it possible to configure the 2nd instance using this single name?
Thanks in advance.
You should be able to create a DNS SRV record to point to the named
instance.

|||Named Instance support was introduced in MDAC 2.6. If you have to use an
earlier MDAC stack, you must alias the named instance using the client
network utility on each client.

Installing a local instance of SQL on a Cluster Node

Hi
I have an Active/Passive SQL 2000 Cluster - the OS is W3K Server.
I would like to install a local copy of SQL Server on the node that is
currently passive - if I start the SQL install process, it does give me
this option but I don't know what, if any, problems this might cause.
I appreciate if the currently active node fails, it will failover to
the node which also has a local version running as well.
Has anyone done this? I've tried searching groups and Microsoft without
success.
Thanks
Toby
It's OK to install local instances on cluster nodes. Just make sure the
instance name does not conflict with any instance on the cluster.

Has anyone done this? I've tried searching groups and Microsoft without
success.
Thanks

Yes, you can do it, but it is a violation of the HA spirit. Meaning, why in
the world would you want to screw around and do that when the company has
obviously felt that the other SQL instances (in the cluster) require HA?
Don't mess with the HA environment!

So, your test environment doesn't mirror production?
Actually, I can see doing that.

Installing A Failover Cluster

I have two matched servers, one will be Active and one will be Passive.
The servers have Windows 2000 Advanced Server and I have SQL Server 2000
Enterprise Edition.
My question is, do I also need a box called a Shared Disk Array, or can I
use another server I currently have that has lots of disk space on it?
Correction: I have Windows 2000 Advanced Server

Installing a cluster on an existing instance of SQL 2000 SP3A

I have been "tapped" to install a passive node on an instance of SQL
that is not currently configured for clustering on a W2003. Can I
simply install clustering services on the current production instance,
then install a new instance on what would be the passive node? Then add
it via cluster admin?
Can I run cluster communications, heartbeat, etc on the public NICs..I
do not have two interfaces on each server.
Any information would be greatly appreciated as I have only done new
deployments and this being a prod server I do not want to try the trial
and error approach.
Thanks,
Hulicat
You can use the current active node as a cluster member. You can then
install a clustered instance of SQL and migrate the databases. The final
step is to turn off the original instance. Possible, Yes. Recommended, NO.
This entire project sounds like a low-availability solution. You are
reusing equipment instead of purchasing a certified cluster configuration.
The one-NIC cluster is possible but falls into the "worst practices"
category. Not having a test platform, even a virtual one, is asking for
even more trouble.
Clustering is a hardware and systems tool to help achieve increased system
availability. Shortcutting the hardware and the procedures will result in
lower availability rather than higher availability.

Installation SQL-Cluster failed

Hi,
we are trying to install "SQL-Server Version 8.00.780 SP3" on a Win2003

Have you carried out the tests suggested in the Cluster checklist?
If you are happy with the installation try copying the remsetup.ini file from the user dir as mentioned in KB301520.
|||Try these steps to see if you can resolve the problem:
1) Check and see if the machine is configured to disallow 8.3 name creation
by
checking the following registry key:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\FileSystem\N tfsDisable8dot3NameCreatio
n
A value of 1 means this is disabled and hence change it back to 0. This
requires a
reboot for it to take effect
OR
2) Change the TEMP and TMP User Environment Variables to a path that does
not have
spaces in them. For example: c:\temp. Use the SET command to verify the new
TEMP
location is in effect. This does not require a reboot

Installation SQL Server 2k Cluster on Windows 2003 failed. Please help.

Hello group,
today we tried to install a SQL 2k cluster very unsuccessfully. Would
need your support.
What we have:
2 Server (node 1, node 2) with external storage installed as a cluster
(MSCS). Partitions are C (for node 1 and 2), e and q (quorum db) - both
on the external storage.
OS is Windows 2003 Enterprise
We copied the installfiles to C:\temp on node1 and made a share. Node2
can access this share.
Antivirus was disabled.
We started the installation with a domainaccount that has local
administrative rights on both nodes and can be started as a service.
As installation target for the program we chosed C:... and the data
should be stored on e:...
Installation started - we gave the virtual server a different name than
the cluster and a free ip adress. Both nodes were seen during the next
steps and we gave an instancename like "DECGNWSSQL20007". Licensing was
choosen as 2CPU.
When the server should start the installation, it immediately stopped
with the message: Setup failed to perform required operations on the
cluster nodes.
We don=B4t have any clue how to continue. Could need your help.
Thanks in advance
Stefan
The error message "Setup failed to perform required operations on the cluster nodes." is a generic message. To understand where the setup failed, one has to review the sqlstp.log (search for this on the node
where you ran the setup). Based on this file, you will know where the error occurred and then accordingly you may need to review additional logs like sqlstpN.log (where N is an integer) on one/both nodes,
sqlclstr.log, cluster.log.

Yes, as mentioned I deinstalled Terminal Server and then the installation

"Virtual server cannot go online" and automatically the desintallation
starts. I don′t have any clue for the reason. Does anybody know how to fix?

Looks like the unattended installation on all cluster nodes succeeded and failed during the virtual resources creation step. Ofcourse check sqlstp.log to find out where exactly the issue is. If indeed it failed during the
virtual server resources section then you will need to review sqlclstr.log and cluster.log to get to the root cause.

Installation Reporting services on SQL fail-over cluster

Hi,
Perhaps a simple question, but I could not find a clear answer in the
deployment guide. I want to install SQL Reporting Services on a SQL fail over
cluster to be used for MOM Reporting. I was wondering where to run the set up
for SRS. Do I run it on the Virtual server or on one (or both) of the nodes?
Does anyone know?
Regards, MartijnIt is best practice to run SQL Server or RS on the CLuster node. In Any case
once you go to the virtual server, you will be directed to the "Physical
Node" that owns the cluster resources. Always use the Virtual Server name to
do anything for RS or SQL Server.

Installation of SQL sp3a on Windows 2003 ent Failover Clustering

Platform: Windows 2003 ent failover cluster SQL Server 2k ent
We did installation of SQL Server 2k ent successfully. We are using Mixed
mode which allow both NT and SQL authentication. We assigned sa password. We
are able to start/stop/start SQL servrices. We are able to failover to
another node on SQL server. Right after completed SQL Server 2k ent
installation, we started to apply SP3a. But we got error in middle of serivce
pack: Setup was unable to verify the state of the server for an upgrade.
Verify the server is able to start and that you provide a valid sa password
and restart setup. We followed the instruction on article ID 330022 and
readme come with CD but it still doesn't work.
I also referenced the article http://support.microsoft.com/?id=814844 but
they are not really applied to our case. Our platform is on WINDOWS 2003.
We are implementing Failover Clustering. Our MDAC is 2.8 version above. We
didn't have any problem to install sql sp3a on any other win2k or win2k3 ent
platform. Only this time is Windows 2003 ent FAILOVER CLUSTERING.

Installation of Multiple named instances in Cluster environment

Hi All..

We are planning to build a cluster environment on MS SQL 2005. We want to install multiple named instances in a single database server and use cluster for that database server.

Is this option possible ? Any relevant documentation would be helpful

Thanks in advance

Regards

Madhav

Yes, you can install multiple instances of SQL Server into a cluster. All of the relevant information can be found in Books Online.|||

here is some supplemental information to Books Online that was recently published:

Installation error the parameter is incorrect

We are attempting to install a cluster for further SAP installation. I have
read the following article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;302491
I get this exact error message but (as far as I can tell) I have no invalid
characters. The ipAddresses string = 10.10.0.18,255.0.0.0,Public
Can anyone help (I'm a bit baffled at the moment!)
Thanks
I have now worked out what the problem is. There is another cluster with
"Public" defined. Have changed this to something else and it now works.

Installation Error - Need some Help

Hello All:
Had a working SQL cluster but we had to uninstall SQL. When we go to
reinstall SQL (virtual server) on node 1, we get the following error.
"An error occured while creating SQL virtual server resources for
clustering. Setup could not connect to the database to update
cluster-specific information is the system tables."
Setup then goes to cleaning up etc and exits. However, SQL server is not
succesfully installed. I cannot find referrence to this error anywhere and
cannot figure out what the problem is. I would greatly appreciate any help.
Stan,
I see no one has answered you. I am having a similar problem with almost the same error message. The one I'm getting is more like:
"An error occured while creating SQL virtual server resources for
clustering. The specified module could not be found".
My problem is on a brand new cluster, both nodes working fine, passing all failover tests. This is on the initial installation attempt. I don't know what gives.
I am seeking help as well, but there aren't a whole lot of individuals out there that have gone down this path. What a piece of crap Microsoft has dumped on us now. Good luck in finding your answer.
