Greetings.
I just installed MSDE 2000A
How can I install northwind database on it ?
I looked up on the net and it asks you to install vs2003 version of MSDE
So do I have to del this and install the other MSDE ?
Coz I did run the ConfigSamples.exe from my VS 2003 sdk directory, but it
did not install northwind database for me.

Installing MSDE SQL 2000 SP4
I was working on a install for MSDE SQL SERVER 2000 when I noticed that there
was a more recent version available. I have not yet installed and wanted to
kow if the Service Pack 4 for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - Desktop Engine
(MSDE 2000) included the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - Database Engine
Components and the Service Pack 4 for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - Analysis
Services Components in it's install or do I have to install them after I set
up the engine for the first time. Let me re-iterate that I am not upgrading
an instance rather I am trying to install an instance with the SP4 updates,
hoping that I get all of the tools that I can in one shot.

Thank you for your answer. I have another question. I am sending these
files across a network and trying to automate the installation. I know how
to automate the MSDE install after I have extracted the files from the
SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE, but is there a way to use command
lines to extract silently or maybe even feed it a path to extract to? That
way I only have to worry about one file?

installing MS SQL on server with sybase ASA
I'm getting ready to install MS SQL 2005 Enterprise Ed. on a Windows 2003
server. This server already has Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere Version 9
installed with few db running. Do you think there would be any
problems/conflicts if I install MS SQL on this machine?
My other question is what ports does MS SQL uses to connect to db?
Here are the specifications of the server:
Dell PowerEdge 2850
Dual Xeon 2.8 GHz
2 GB RAM

If your SQL Server is a default instance, then it'd use only static ports
(1433 by default). If it's a named instance, then it'd use dynamic ports (by
default) however you can set the ports as static after installation. UDP
1434 port is used to let clients know what the dynamic port is.

Installing Local SQL2000 Personal Edition
I am trying to install a local version of SQL2000 on my XP Pro.
I am having this problem, do you know why because I cannot find the solution on the microsoft website:
Server: Msg 17, Level 16, State 1
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.You'd probably do better to post this kind of question in the Micrsoft SQL Server (http://www.dbforums.com/f7/) forum.

Installing Enterprise version over Standard
We currently are running one instance of SQL Server 2000 Standard with a few databases. We need to upgrade to Enterprise version to use data cubes. Should we be able to install right over the top of our current instance of SQL Server or will we have to
create a new instance?

You can upgrade the SQL Server standard to SQL server enterprise edition
directly.
Steps from boks online:-
How to perform an edition upgrade within SQL Server 2000 (Setup)
To upgrade a SQL Server 2000 installation to a different edition of SQL
Server 2000
1.. Insert the Microsoft SQL Server 2000T compact disc for the edition
you want to install into your CD-ROM drive. If the compact disc does not
autorun, double-click Autorun.exe in the root directory of the compact disc.
2.. Select SQL Server 2000 Components, select Install Database Server, and
then setup prepares the SQL Server Installation Wizard. At the Welcome
screen, click Next.
3.. In Computer Name dialog box, select Local Computer or Remote computer.
4.. In the Installation Selection dialog box, click Upgrade, Remove, or
Add Components to an existing instance of SQL Server, and then click Next.
5.. In the Instance Name dialog box, click Next.
6.. In the Existing Installation dialog box, click Upgrade your existing
installation, and then click Next.
7.. If Setup detects that you are doing an edition upgrade, the Upgrade
dialog box appears. Click Yes, Upgrade my <text specific to the upgrade> to

Installing and using Developer 2005
I am currently having problems with the SQL Server 2005 Developer.
1. I have a Windows XP SP2 Japanese version.
2. This machine is connected to a domain managed by Linux server.
3. I login with a domain account and install.
Initially, the intallations were failing with an error message that I do not have
administrator right.
We created an account on my machine with the same user name as that used
for the domain, and gave this administrator rights.
With this the installation was completed. However, there is another problem,
I cannot connect to the SQL Server.
For the installation, I chose "Local System" with Windows Authentication,
but the connection to the database still fails with the error message that remote
connection is not supported. I do not understand why I need TCP to accesss a local
installation of the SQL Server.
However, I followed the procedure outlined in a MS KB to enable TCP. But the
connection to the database still fails.
I am using the Management Studio to connect to SQL Server. I have also tried creating
a database in VS. NET 2005 and this also fails. I have checked the services and all are running.
What is wrong and what can I do? (it takes more than an hour to install this stuff and it is
really consuming my time). Any help?

Actually you are missing a lot the Developer edition and Express comes locked down you have to go in and enable all you need with the Configuration Manager and Surface area configuration tool. It also helps if you use both TCP/IP and Named Pipes. I have covered all in the last posting in the thread below, the instructions are for Express and the developer edition but ignore the server registration section. I would also recommend mixed authentication mode so VS2005 will not cause you problems during development. Post again if you still need help.

That never helped or solved the connection problem.
That KB starts like...
"When you try to connect to an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 from a remote computer, you may receive an error message."
I installed "Local System" and do not see how this statement applies to my case when I am only trying to use the SQL Server on the same machine.

Installer confused about Sql Version
I'm installing RS on a server that currently has MSDE for several
applications. I've installed Sql Server 2000 on the box for the purpose of RS
but the installer keeps telling me I'm using the wrong version. Not sure what
to do?Are you trying to install RS to use MSDE? If so RS is not supported on
MSDE. If not, please explain your issue more clearly.

I've uninstalled all MSDE databases. I have only SQL 2000 Developer and it
still says: "This edition of the Report Server Database is not supported on
the edition of SQL Server 2000 you have chosen. Please choose another SQL
Server that matches the requirements.
So where does the installer go to check what the current version is. Perhaps
my database instance is screwed. Is there a way to change the Sql 2000
instance name?

I am really in a fix.I have downloaded the trial version from MIcrosoft site and run setup with named instance. But I cannot find my management console link anywhere. Can anyone help me here .
My site is : Windows XP Professional SP2
Installed : SQLServer 2005 180Day Trial Pack downloaded from Microsoft Network.
I ran setup from : server directory and also from tools directory.
In my programes menu I can only see Configuration Toolsunder which there are three options :
1) SQL Server Configuration Tool
2) SQL Server Surface Configuration Tool and
3) SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting
Is it SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition? XP SP2 does not support Enterprise edition. You need server operating systems to support Enterprise edition such as W2K SP4, W2K3 EE SP2, Longhorn Server.

I just uninstalled everything and run the installer again . It says SQL 2005 Server but does not give anytype of edition. However now I find that the Management Console is appearing in the program menu.

1/How did you uninstall everything? I uninstalled in the wrong order from add/remove programs now I am in three quarters installed limbo. [Ghosting the machine seems the simplest way out].
2/I did not get the tools setup to work, or the sample database install in the server directory, the error message was (in both cases)
"The following components that you chose to install are already installed on the machine. To view a report of available options and alternatives click on Details."
Clicking on details was unhelpful (said to maintain components from add/remove programs)
[The components that were already installed did not mention the sample databases]
This is on Windows 2000 SP4, with sqlserver 2005 evaluation edition.

I simply went to the Add/remove programs and selected the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 , clicked remove . It asked and it simply removed it clean including the native client etc. Although the Add/Remove page still shows the name it has actually removed the product. To remove the name from the list you will have to select them one by one and click remove. It will prompt you with something like 'This program can only be used for removing installed options' Just click Ok and the entry will go away .
For the tools setup to work when you install you will get a page after the SQL support files and Native client are installed wherein you are asked to choose what you wish to install . Select both the SQL database services as well as the Client tools ( Last option on the page ) then click next .

|||Thanks...I went add/remove [the wrong sql server component first] and the computer removed the entry in add/remove programs but left the program (mostly) intact [I had to repair .net from the add/remove programs section]

Yes I managed to resolve the problem . Here is what I did
1) Went to Add/Remove programs
2) Select MS SQL Server 2005
3) Clicked on Remove ( It asked me what components I want to remove so I checked Both Database Server and Workgroup Client )
4) Then removed everything else that was MS SQL
5) Re-ran the setup file
Wala .. I had the SQL Server Management Console in the Program List.

According to the readme, here are the version numbers for each service pack:
Do I trust the Version Number or the Product Level? Anyone know what the story is? TIA.
The numbers are TDS( tabular data stream) yes the increament is based on service packs in SQL Sever 2000 and in Win2k you are missing two service packs because I have a box in Houston running it and as of 2005 December I had SP4, I have installed the product that is SQL Server 2000 on all existing os including XP home. I also have SQL Server 2000 SP3 and SP3a in .sql files. So you just need two service packs for Win2k. Hope this helps.|||Thanks Caddre. I didn't realize it was reporting the OS service pack as opposed to the SQL Server service pack. I'm aware I haven't applied the latest Windows SP - I'm deferring IE 7 for the moment.

It was reporting both because the first is for Win2k while the TDS number are for SQL Server 2000 Service Pack because it default to 80 and the extra numbers defines the service packs. One more thing build 2600 in Win2k is Advanced Server.

I've installed the new version of BOL feb 2007. Now whenever I click on a link in the books online I get presented a popup with 2 times the same message.
I presume one links to the new bol, while the other links to the help in my msdn that is installed together with VS2005.
Now how am I supposed to know which link in the popup directs me to the most recent version of BOL?
e.g.
I am working on a SSIS package project in VS2005. In the help menu I select 'How do I...'

See if you have Books Online installed twice - the best thing to do is to go to the Setup CD and remove them both, and just install the latest.|||Before I posted my question I've already had a look in the control panel - Add:remove programs to see if the BOL was installed twice. I only see one installation Microsoft SQl server 2005 Books Online (English)(February 2007).
As I've remarked in my first post, I think the links are
1) to the MSDN documentation from visual studio
2) to the BOL feb 2007
I cannot afford to uninstall Visual Studio 2005.
|||Ah - I think I've seen this before. When you have both VS and SQL Server installed, I've seen the help get a little confused, since the help facility is shared but not exactly the same. I'd recommend posting this same question in the Installation forum - I think I saw an answer there once.|||Some collegues of mine here have given me the following suggestion for you:
The best solution is to uninstall the (older) version of Yukon Books Online that ships in the MSDN Library. To uninstall this version, go to Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, click Change/Remove, click Modify, click Custom, unselect "Microsoft SQL Server" under "Enterprise Servers and Development" in the feature tree, and complete the wizard.
By the way, this is documented in the Books Online topic "Adding and Removing Help Collections".

Installation SQL-Cluster failed
Hi,
we are trying to install "SQL-Server Version 8.00.780 SP3" on a Win2003
2-node Cluster. The Installation breaks, and in the sqlstp.log we find the
Message "remsetup.exe not find". In the Knowledge Base we find problems with
Terminal Service (no TS installed) and with special character in connection
names (the names are public and private). We have log in as a domain admin
and the sql engine and the agent are started with a domain admin.

Sound to me like your MS cluster isn't installed correctly.
Have you carried out the tests suggested in the Cluster checklist?
If you are happy with the installation try copying the remsetup.ini file from the user dir as mentioned in KB301520.

by
checking the following registry key:

I am installing SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services trial version from the cd I received at the recent simiar, here is the details of the errors I get while running the installation
1. Report Server component requirement - explaination of the problem is iis is either not installed or not iis 5.0 or later. I had IIS 6.0 installed
2. Report Server component requirement - explaination of the problem is Windows SharePoint Services is installed on this computer. (What's that mean?)
Can you please tell me how I can resolve these issues.

installation problems
I downloaded the latest version (I guess) and tried to install, but it
doesn't seem to have installed. The file name is MSDE2000A.exe, and it's
about 43meg.
I double-click, go through the whole thing accepting all the default
options, and when I am done, I see nothing in the services dialog that
indicates I have installed this. Nor do I see the thing in the system tray
that I see referenced in this group in other threads.
Anyone know what I am doing wrong?
I should add that I'm on Windows 2000 Pro, no SP. It's in a lab, so it's got
no internet access and is a fresh, clean install of Windows.

in order to install MSDE you have to run the setup.exe bootstrap installer
passing in the required/desired parameters...
that's to say you have to open a command prompt windows, navigate to the
folder you unpacked the Web downloaded package and run
C:\...\>setup.exe <parameters list>

INSTALLATION PROBLEM OF SQL SERVER

I had an older version of sql server 2005 i.e. 9.00.16 or something like that...but for my work i had to use the newer version of it i.e. 9.0.1314.6...so i uninstalled everything by now from the previous version...now in my ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS i have :
Microsoft .net framework 1.1
microsoft .net framework 1.1 hotfix
microsoft visual j#.net
microsoft visual studio .net enterprise architect 2003...and
MICROSOFT .NET FRAMEWORK 2.0 BETA...
now when i m trying to install the new version it gives me error as :
SQL SERVER 2005 setup has detected incompatible components from beta versions of Visual Studio,.net framework or sql server 2005. Use add or remove programs to remove these components, and then run sql server 2005 setup again. for detailed instructions on uninstalling SQL SERVER 2005, see the sql server 2005 readme.
and if i m uninstalling .NET FRAMEWORK 2 BETA(since thats the only beta version on my machine) then it gives me error as:
.NET FRAMEWORK 2 needed for installing SQL SERVER 2005....
i have no idea what can i do...since .net framework 2 is not available...everywhere its .net framework 2 beta....

I had to uninstall it (.Net Framework 2). I would try to reinstall the .Net Framework 2 from the install instructions link. Reboot and then un install. I beleive your problem is the .Net framework that must not have installed correctly.|||

i even tried that...but this also didnt help...but i found the solun today from the webpage http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=63fce120-5e87-4af1-b080-ca461aeafaa2&displaylang=en ...here they have .NET FRAMEWORK 2...instead of beta version of it...
