Installing MSDE2000 sp3 - help

Hiya folks,
I'm a newbie at this, so forgive the ignorance that I may display!
I have installed a software package on my system that installs MSDE through
merge modules contained in its MSI. I have several workstations that
connect. Unfortunately, with SP2 coming down the pipe for windows xp, i
have to do lots of fancy stuff to make sure they still connect (it uses
named pipes tcp/ip). The solution according to microsoft is to install SP3
for sql...i've downloaded the MSDE version of the upgrade, and attempted to
install for several hours with no luck.
First, it said i required a strong password, which i supplised in the
setup.ini:
[options]
sapassword="mypassword"
Things started to load, and then the installer quit. Confused, I started it
again. Now the installer is giving me '
the instance name specified is invalid'
Ok, so i go back to the setup.ini and add a line
[options]
sapassword="mypassword"
instancename="liveddm"
and STILL, i get the invalid instance name error message. No matter what I
seem to try, it is telling me i have an invalid instance name; if i use
enterprise manager, i can clearly see my instance and browse the attached
database. I've also tried instancename="computername\liveddm" with no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Sheldon
Unfortunately, I believe that if your software vendor has installed MSDE
using merge modules from within their own MSI they will need to supply
you with the patch package themselves.

Installing

Hi Group
Absolute newbie in reporting services...
Have a server with a SQL 2005 Standard Installation (version 9.00.1399.06) -
and now I've been asked to check if reporting services are installed - How
can I see this - and if its not there how do I install it ?Go to Control Panel, open "Services" applet, if there is "ReportServer"
service running, then, most likely, RS is installed on this vbox. Or go to
IIS manager, underneath Website, if you can see virtual folder "Reports" and
"ReportServer" (or Reports$ServerInstanceName and
ReportServer$ServerInstanceName), then, RS is installed.
RS can be installed on a computer where no SQL Server itself is installed.
However, it requires IIS. To installed it, simply place CD/DVD into drive
and in the installation wizard, make sure you select Reporting Services. You
may need to plann ahead for the user accounts used by RS: RS uses different
accounts for the service and data source access. You'd better plan ahead
according to your needs. RS is also an ASP.NET application, which has its
own security configuration that you need to plan well before hand.

installation problems : product ID rejected

Hello,

Maybe is it a newbie question : it is the first time I install a SQL Server licence purchased with the eopen program.

My SQL server licence is a french one. I purchased the correct media kit.

During the installation, I am asked the name, and the company name but the product key is greyed with product id which begin with "RY62Q". I guess it is normal (?)

But later on, when it comes to installing SQL server itself, i get a message telling that my product ID is incorrect. (id : 28021; event type : sqlca\sqlcax.cpp@.DetectProductID@.DetectProductID@.x6d75).

I tried dozens of times :

-with another admin account

-after cleaning up the temp and program files subdirectories

-after cleaning up the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server,HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSFTESQLInstMap; there was nothing anyway)

If it helps, I first try the installation from a wrong media. As I had no key, I went not far away.

I did received the authorisation number etc from Microsoft but I have no clue of what have to do from that.

As you understood, any help would be appreciated.

It is solved. I am really not sure how, but it solved.

I was about to reinstall the server. As it is a remote server, I had to upload the cds. In order not to have to do it again, I moved the cds to another partition. Just to be sure, I tried once again the installation...and it worked. The only possible cause I see is that the installation program detected a subfolder named "sql2005_cd1"(with a wrong media) in the same folder as my "newsql2005_cd1" (which actually contained the correct media). Maybe it is a dummy anti-piracy system, don't know...but now it worked and I am happy Wink

Installation of msde

Please help,...

If I am going to install MSDE 2000, do i need to install sql server..? I'm newbie in installing msde, After my installation what should I expect from my desktop to determine that MSDE already installed? Is it somewhat the same with sql server with Enterprise manger? Im familiar in using Sql server but not in MSDE. Do I can make table and manage it accordingly using MSDE alone? Or in order for me to create table I need to installed SQL Server..?Any information is highly appreciated.

hi Jack,

just an initial note.. are you considering installing SQLExpress instead of MSDE?

MSDE is based on SQL Server 2000 code base, where SQLExpress is based on SQL Server 2005..

no... MSDE IS SQL Server... just an edition of it, so you can install it on it's own..

nothing, but the SQL Server Service Manager in the tray area.. from this tool you can start/pause/stop the service..

SQLExpress provides a graphical management tool, SQL Server Management Studio Express you cand download for free, a subset of the full management tool of SQL Server 2005..

on the other side, MSDE does not provide management tools but a command line tool. oSql.exe, so you have to use other options, like my free tool for MSDE management..

again, try considering installing SQLExpress instead of MSDE if this is an available option in your scenario..

regards

|||I recommend following Andrea's exhortation to use SQL Server 2005 Express instead of MSDE. (MSDE is NOT supported on Vista, and is an old, out of date product.) SQL Express is the 'free' replacement -and so much more.)|||many thanks for the information. This is very useful to me. Go bless...
