Installing MSDE 2000 Rel A

Hi all,
I am unable to install MSDE on Window XP pro, SP2. Setup rolls back every
time without any indication of why. I had an earlier installation of MSDE
which I removed manually following the instructions in the Knowledge Base
article. I installed MSDE on a Windows 2000 Pro machine using the same
procedure without any problems.
The command line syntax I'm using is: setup sapwd="[mypassword]"
SECURITYMODE=SQL
Can anyone help?

When you manually uninstalled MSDE did you also remove the "MSSQLServer" key
under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft ? That key and the "Microsoft
SQL Server" key needs to be removed. Also remove the entire directory tree
under c:\program files\Microsoft SQL Server. Also, reboot the machine after
doing the manual uninstall.

I did delete those keys from the registry with no luck.
In a separate post, I uploaded part of the install log what appears to point
to the problem . Searching for "return value 3" I found the following:
"Starting custom action InstallPerfMon
Registering performance counters from sqlctr.ini
PerfmonLoad routine returned error code 6
Action ended 11:32:55: InstallFinalize. Return value 3."
According to a Knowledge Base article, the only solution to this involves
some advanced level tinkering with the registry, which I don't feel
comfortable undertaking. Is there any other way?

Installing MSDE

in Office 2003 Pro I also downloaded the MSDE2000A from MS
site. When I try to install it it decides to stop
intalling and gives this error.
(A strong SA pasword is required for security reasons.
Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same. please refer
ro the readme for more details. Setup will now exit)
Well... I refered and i looked but didn't see a thing.
So ... I came here.

you have to provide this information as a parameter like
c:\...\>setup.exe (other params) SAPWD="your strong pwd" (other params) /L*v

I have failed to tell you (I guess) that I am new to this
SQL.
I have never installed anything from a command prompt
before..

of Office. Inside this package was about 6 CD's and one of
them says SQL server 2000 is this the real thing or do I
need more? I installed this once and was in dire need of
information to get it to work but of course I didn't get
it. So.. I uninstalled it.
I really need some guidence here please.

you have to install MSDE providing some parameters... this can be done
providing an INI file the setup bootstrapper will read, or just pass them as
command line parameters, and this is the way I do prefer and suggest...
and yes... you have to run the setup.exe from a command prompt...
so go this way...
locate your MSDE installer directory and provide all required params...
c:\...\>setup.exe
add the sa pwd as
SAPWD="your pwd"
we don't want to install a named instance of MSDE, as it will be the default
instance, so omit relative param...
we do not want to specify custom directories for binaries and data files,
and they will point to Program Files\..., so omit relative param...
we do wan to to allow network connections, so specify relative param as
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0
se do want to allow SQL Server authenticated connections instead of trusted
WinNT connections only, so specify relative param as
SECURITYMODE=SQL
and finally, we do want the setup to log all install operation to a verbose
txt file
/L*v "c:\msdelog.txt"
the resulting command will be
c:\...\>setup.exe SAPWD="your pwd" DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0
SECURITYMODE=SQL /L*v "c:\msdelog.txt"
and pelase do use the package you downloaded from the web, MSDE Web Release
A, as it is updated at the last service pack level

I just do not get your meaning CD.It is not on a CD
Yes on my c drive the folder MSDERela is there and the
setup.exe is inside that folder

Installing Local SQL2000 Personal Edition

I am trying to install a local version of SQL2000 on my XP Pro.

I am having this problem, do you know why because I cannot find the solution on the microsoft website:
Server: Msg 17, Level 16, State 1
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.You'd probably do better to post this kind of question in the Micrsoft SQL Server (http://www.dbforums.com/f7/) forum.

pro and using the developer edition. When I run the install, it completes
normally. The registry has entries for the new named instance. When I try
to register the new server using enterprise manager and add it to a group,
first the wizard does not list the new name. If I type in the name and
proceed, I eventually get an error message saying "sql server does not exist
or access denied. ..." The error log shows that it gets part way with
starting the service but then is stopped before completing. I don't remember
now the limitations on the Developer Edition, is this one of them or is there
another problem? I am using mixed mode with an sa login.

options during the install. I generally clicked Next. On one page, my user

won't be able to try servername\instancename until I return to my office.
However, when I tried to run sp3a againt the new instance, it showed
instancename in the selection list. sp3a was then was unable to connect to
the instance and as a result, the sp3a upgrade failed to run. It that case,
there was no issue with servername\instancename since I didn't need to type
anything. In both the sp3a upgrade and register server cases, sql recognizes
that the instance is there, it just cannot make a connection. The failure
has to do with logon but I can't see what the problem is.

Installed SQL Server 2005 CTP.. wheres enterprise manager?

Hi I installed SQL Server 2005 CTP on my win XP pro sp2 machine. It has
installed the configuration tools menu in start > programs. But i cannot
find enterprise manager. am i missing something?
Also, am i rightin saying that SQL 7 & SQL 2000 Server cannot be installed
on windows XP Pro, BUT SQL 2005 can be installed on XP Pro? (im talking
about the actual server software, not the client tools).

There is no Enterprise Manager in SQL Server 2005. EM functionality is
included in Sql Server Management Studio.
SQL 2000 Developer and Evaluation editions can be installed on XP but not
Standard or Enterprise. SQL 2005 Developer, Express and Workgroup editions
can be installed on XP but not Standard or Enterprise. For the complete

SQL Server 7.0 is not supported on Windows XP
SQL Server 2000 and 2005, developer and personal editions are installable on
Windows XP. Standard and Enterprise Editions are not.
SQL Server Management Studio is the replacement for Enterprise Manager. If
it is not there, it means you did not select it during the install.
SQL Server 2005 Express does not ship with a UI until 2006.

SQL Server 7.0 is not supported on Windows XP
SQL Server 2000 and 2005, developer and personal editions are installable on
Windows XP. Standard and Enterprise Editions are not.
SQL Server Management Studio is the replacement for Enterprise Manager. If
it is not there, it means you did not select it during the install.
SQL Server 2005 Express does not ship with a UI until 2006.

Hi I installed SQL Server 2005 CTP on my win XP pro sp2 machine. It has
installed the configuration tools menu in start > programs. But i cannot
find enterprise manager. am i missing something?

included in Sql Server Management Studio.
SQL 2000 Developer and Evaluation editions can be installed on XP but not
Standard or Enterprise. SQL 2005 Developer, Express and Workgroup editions
can be installed on XP but not Standard or Enterprise. For the complete

Installation Tutorial

Does anyone know of a good, straight forward tutorial for installing SQL
Server on XP Pro?
I will be getting a copy from university under the Academic Alliance scheme
and therefore it doesn't come with the installation manual. I want to make
sure I install everything correctly so I know if I have any problems it's
with my apps as opposed to SQL Server.

ok i am working on Win2k pro.
i want to be able to develop reports and then move them to the production
server.
I can't use MSDE, or Std Edition on my machine-- so I finally settled on
Developers' edition of SQL OLTP.
The CD that I have only had a Std Edition of RS; and I couldn't get RS Std
to use SQL Developers' edition for the RS databases.
So I had to download the trial.
And now the http://127.0.0./reportServer site is failing; but it looks like
the http://127.0.0.1/reportManager site is working as expected.. with about
80% of the functionality that I remembered.
I am a local admin.
I guess that I am a lil bit confused.. When I installed; it wanted to make 2
sites http://127.0.0.1/reports and http://127.0.0.1/reportServer
I was just confused; the report manager site-- shouldn't that be called
ReportManager? It defaulted to 'Reports' and i changed it-
People will actually naviagate to the ReportServer site in order to view
reports' Or does everyone-- from me to an end user; have to go to
http://127.0.0.1/ReportManager site now?

>|||If you check the URL of an actual report inside ReportManager, you'll see
that it's actually calling a ReportServer URL, so you shouldn't change
permissions on ReportServer. Whatever permissions you set via ReportManager
will be reflected in the ReportServer. ReportManager is simply a friendly
interface to the same thing, with some admin tools on top if it for
administrators.

Installation problems

I have installed MSDE locally on Windows XP Pro, just for
testing SQL Server CE 2.0 on a PocketPC.
I know that one other application can create and access
data tables,
but osql does not work at all, except for the statement
osql -E -Q "SELECT * FROM syslogins"
I assume that 'Pubs' is a default database that is
supposed to be installed. How can I verify that?

what kind of error are you reported with?
if your login account has been granted database access to master database
and have read permission on system table (bad :D) you should be able to
query it, else you will be reported with something like
Server: Msg 230, Level 14, State 1, Line 1
SELECT permission denied on column 'password' of object 'syslogins',
database 'master', owner 'dbo'.

you have to manually enable them, bot at install time providing the

protocol (usually TCP/IP)

I had the same problem and I was able to fix it... but I did a few things and not sure which one did the trick...

1) I completely "Turned Off" or "Disabled" every feature in my Norton Security Suite

2) There was a .NET 1.1 Hotfix (on top of the .NET 1.1 Framework Install) that I unistalled

3)... actually I think that it is it.... Oh... I actually removed the components (in Windows Components) for Outlook Express, Windows Messenger and ALSO IIS. Basically Uncheck the options and saved the configuration...

Then the SQL Server 2005 Express Installed with no issues!

Try it out.

Installation of SQL Server 2000 Standard On XP Pro

Im attempting to install SQL Server 2000 Standard on Windows XP Pro and it keeps returning to me an error:

"Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition server component is not supported on this operating system. Only client components will be available for installation."

Anybody have any idea what this means according to the documentation and previous posts on installation problems my operating system should support this edition of SQL server.Since Windows XP Pro is a workstation and not a server, SQL Server 2000 Standard can not be installed on a workstation. Enterprise Edition setup and it prompts you that only the client tools
can be installed. I wanted to have a local database as well So what
install should I have used to do so. Any information would greatly be

Installation issues

G'day,

I've been having trouble installing SQL Server Express on my XP Pro laptop. I have uninstalled and reinstalled .NET Framework 2.0 and successfully installed VB 2005 Express without error and I am a local Admin. The destination folder is not compressed or encrypted so it is a real mystery to me.

Installation Issues

I have installed MSDE2000A on both 2000 and XP Pro machines, the install
appears to go fine. After the reboot, the service manager icon is empty,
when I look for the services in the drop down in the Service Manager it is
empty. In the system services screen, I have made sure all three services
are running. I cannot restore a database on this machine or connect to it
with Enterprise Manager. Any thoughts or help is appreciated.

First of all when you say the msde installtion "appears" to be installed
fine , have you verified the setup log file to see if the msde did indeed
install sucessfully or if there are any messages
Please follow the steps mentioned below to solve the problem:
1) verify the setup log for any error messages (most probably the msde
wasnever installed properly in the first place)
2) Can you see the msde services in the services . Try to start them
manually
3) Connect to the instance locally with the followong command
<installdrive>\program files\microsoft sql server\80\tools\binn \osql -E
-Sservername\instancename
do not use the -S parameter if default instance is used.
4) If you connect successfully then the msde is correctly installed.
5) Ensure that the tcp/ip is enabled using the client configuration tool
(cliconfg.exe) and also the server network utility (svrnetcn.exe )
6) try manually typing the server name in the service manager when it comes
out empty and then try to connect

|||I have seen this on Win 2003 where MSDE-Rel A is installed using an Instance
Name and there is no default instance.

Installation for Windows XP PRo

I am running from a Windows XP Professional system and would like to install SQL Server 2005. Since I am not running on a server I'm not sure what version I should install. I need access to Reporting Services. Should I install the 2005 Developer Edition? I don't seem to find it in the downloads from MS. Am I on the right track?

Yes, you want 2005 Developer Edition (which functionality is the same as Enterprise).

You will also need to install Internet Information Services (IIS). Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components.

I think you will need the XP Pro CD.
