installing hotfix SQL2000-KB810185-8.00.0780-ENU

I am attempting to install this hotfix on a second instance of SQL Server
2000 running sp3 on a window 2003 server. I successfully installed the
hotfix on the first instance with no problems following the same sequence of
events against the first instance.
I am unable to install as it tells me one of the files is write locked. I
have shutdown both instances (SQL server and SQL agent) as well as the MSDTC.
I have shutdown the Window 2003 server and attempted to run the install. I
was successfully able to install the hotfixes on 2 instances on another
server running the same products.
The file in question is dbmslpcn.dll.
Any suggestions ?
1. Try renaming the DLL - does this work?
2. Run TLIST (included in windows resource kit) to see what app is holding
a lock to this DLL
syntax: TLIST -m <DLL>/<.exe Name>
3. shutdown all unecessary services and set to manual mode, then reboot.
See KB for a list of services to NOT shut down:
INF: Order of Installation for SQL Server 7.0 Clustering Setup WGID:249
ID: 219264
Do not shut off any services necessary for disk or network access.

Installing a Second Instance

Hi,
I'm trying to install a 2nd instance on a cluster.
We've setup two cluster groups C101TC001 and C101TC002, one for each instance.
I've stopped all the services and managed to get the installation to run,
but it won't allow me to apply the Service Pack (3a).
It reports an error
An error has occurred while creating virtual resources for clustering. Can
not create a file when that file already exists.
This then invalidates the instance.
Can anyone assist?
Thanks
Bev
After this I'm unable to get the instance registered or even started.
The error message that you got can be due to various reasons. Here is one Microsoft Knowledge base articles that has the same error (but as I said you may be having a
different issue)
BUG: The Setup program of SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2 or a later version may stop responding in a Windows clustering environment if there is an offline database
http://support.microsoft.com/default...B;EN-US;320524
This KB says the cause is "This problem occurs because Setup program cannot access the database.
During installation in a Windows Clustering environment, Setup program must query the user databases to make sure that all the database files are on disk resources that
have the correct dependencies and the virtual SQL Server resource. The virtual SQL Server resource is required for the failover support. When a database is offline, Setup
program cannot access the database. "
I understand you are installing SP3a and the above KB is for SP2 but one can still get similar error message.
You last point stated that "After this I'm unable to get the instance registered or even started." I think you will need to first concentrate on why this instance is not starting.
Anyways to be able to apply SP3a, the sql instance needs to be running. So, need to troubleshoot why this instance is not coming online. See what errors you get when
you try to being this SQL Server resource online. Try starting it from command promt and see if that works outside the cluster. The errors in SQL Errorlog, NT App, System
logs and cluster.log should be helpful to troubleshoot this further.

installing 2nd instance

I am trying to install a second instance of sql server 2000. I am running xp
pro and using the developer edition. When I run the install, it completes
normally. The registry has entries for the new named instance. When I try
to register the new server using enterprise manager and add it to a group,
first the wizard does not list the new name. If I type in the name and
proceed, I eventually get an error message saying "sql server does not exist
or access denied. ..." The error log shows that it gets part way with
starting the service but then is stopped before completing. I don't remember
now the limitations on the Developer Edition, is this one of them or is there
another problem? I am using mixed mode with an sa login.

What did the error log say was the issue?

|||Per your suggestion. I first installed sp3a on the existing instance of SQL
Server(default instance). This ran without problems and the instance runs
ok. Then I ran the install for 2nd (named) instance. There aren't many
options during the install. I generally clicked Next. On one page, my user
name was displayed along with the domain. I entered my password. A page or
two later, I selected mixed mode and entered the sa password. The intall
seemed to go without any problems. When I then started Enterprise manager to
register the server, first it does not list the new instance in the select a
server page. If I type in the name and continue, I eventually get the
error, "sql server does not exist or access denied
ConnectionOpen(Connect()). Same as before. Then I tried to run sp3a on the
just installed named instance. The setup sees the new instance(i.e. it shows
in a list of instances to upgrade) but when I select the instance and
proceed, eventually I get the error "a service control operation failed for
MSSQL$LJDESIGNS_SC service: 1069 The service did not start due to a logon
failure." I am running windows xp pro sp 2.

However, when I tried to run sp3a againt the new instance, it showed
instancename in the selection list. sp3a was then was unable to connect to
the instance and as a result, the sp3a upgrade failed to run. It that case,
there was no issue with servername\instancename since I didn't need to type
anything. In both the sp3a upgrade and register server cases, sql recognizes
that the instance is there, it just cannot make a connection. The failure
has to do with logon but I can't see what the problem is.

of SQL Server is. This is on Windows 2003, right?

The setup sees the new instance(i.e. it shows
in a list of instances to upgrade) but when I select the instance and
proceed, eventually I get the error "a service control operation failed for
MSSQL$LJDESIGNS_SC service: 1069 The service did not start due to a logon
failure." I am running windows xp pro sp 2.

won't be able to try servername\instancename until I return to my office.

Installation Question

We have a webserver running Frontpage. We have a second server running SQL
Server. I would like to install Reporting Services on the Web Server. Will
there be a problem with this? Will I need to install Visual Studio on the
Webserver first?
ThanksHolly, have you found out anything about this.
If not, consider this a bump.
Thanks,

needed for designing reports, it is not needed on the server. Just ignore
the message about VS when installing the server. I do not have VS or
frontpage running on my servers.

Installation MSDE - worked first time not second

Hello,
On my Window 2000 machine I was able to install MSDE one time. However, was
having trouble actually connecting to the new database server so I though I
would reinstall. Well, I have not had a succesful reinstall yet (I was
closer the first time around). Now, I am a long ways off from developing
anything with MSDE and the instruction on how to set this DB Server up is
not apparent!
I am very frustrated. I don't know what to do at this point.
Please help.

please make sure that previous MSDE installation has been completely fixed,
removing all file system and registry entries as described in
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q290991
this will clean up all info of previously installed and (partially) removed
instances but Window Installer registry entries..
in order to clear them to, you have to follow
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;320873 advices,
using MSIZap.exe from Platform SDK... I never cleared that and have found no
further problems, but my registry is now dirty :-(

|||Thanks, I will follow these steps. I have tried similar steps.
Just recently, I have been trying to obtain the MSIZAP.EXE application but
it is wrapped in together with another SDK. Well, this SDK as failed 2 times
now to install, using the ActiveX installer from MS. So now what? Is there
another way to obtain MSIZAP.EXE?
By the way, this is a fresh copy of Win2K loaded on this system... I'm not
having much luck.

don't know if this is the same...
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...-US/msicuu.exe
it's from an old KB article, id 238413, no more available, but the link
seems to work...
