Installing MDAC 2.5 on W2k sp3

I have tried installing MDAC 2.5 on a w2k sp3 machine and it fails with the following error:

Microsoft Data Access components 2.5 is already installed on the version of windows you are running. Setup cannot update the system. For more information .....

BUT, Mdac 2.5 is not installed on the machine and VB applications using it do not work.

Any ideas?

ThankQ1 Any ideas?

A1 Yes.

1 Check your MDAC component status with the compatibility checking tool. See:

http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm#CCinfo

http://download.microsoft.com/download/dasdk/CC/2.7/WIN98MeXP/EN-US/cc.exe

2 See MDAC Installation Notes at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnmdac/html/data_mdacinstall.asp|||Thanks DBA,

This has let me discover that the latest PCs with W2k have sp3 installed by default which includes MDAC 2.6. It is therefore not possible to install MDAC 2.5 - it physically stops you.

It just means I have to change the references to the ADO 2.5 objects to 2.6...|||You are most welcome.

Hopefully 2.6 is otherwise fully compatible with your applications. Newer (and sometimes corrupt or third party) dll issues are not an uncommon source of spurious "already installed" and similar MDAC errors.sql

Installing feature Pack components with an Application

Hi,

I have developed an application the uses SMO and RMO, now it is time to write the setup for it.

For the setup experience I want to be able to install my application on a clean copy of XP SP2 which has dotnet 2.0 already installed. As such I have downloaded the following from the Feature Pack for Sql 2005 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=d09c1d60-a13c-4479-9b91-9e8b9d835cdc&displaylang=en):

msxml6.msi

sqlncli.msi

sqlserver2005_xmo.msi

Now I'm thinking that I need to launch these msi's from within my own application msi, however, I don't want any UI displayed and I want my own msi to include these msi's when it's calculating the cost of the install.

Is this the correct way to go about getting these components on to a clients machine, i.e. nested msi install, or is there a better way?

Does anyone know what command line args (msiexec) or other options I need to provide for a UI less install of the above?

FYI I'm using VS 2005 to author the install.

Thanks for your help

Graham

Infact, why aren't msm (merge modules) given anymore?

Graham

|||

To get a silent install, use the "\qn" flag for MSIExec. In order to 'chain' MSI installations, you'll need to create a setup.exe wrapper that will launch the MSIs in series.

Here's an example from VS.Net: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=BF253CFD-1EFC-4FC5-BA7E-6A6F21403495&displaylang=en that installs the .NET Framework (hardcoded) then installs your MSI using a settings.ini file. It'll need to be changed to remove the hardcoded installation and then to perhaps iterate through the .ini file to install multiple MSIs.

In response to why we don't ship MSMs any more, it is because we can't service them. If we discover a security (or other) problem with one of the files in the redist packages, we can't issue a QFE for MSMs, but we can issue a QFE for the MSIs that we send out. So it's a servicibility issue.

Installing DSO components

I have problems with redistributing DSO (Decision Support Objects) components. I have excatly followed the instruction summarized under "Redistributuing DSO" in MSDN and have also read redist.txt on SQL Server CD.
I still receive "ActiveX : Can't create object" or in other installations the more cryptic one "DSO: Cann't not connect to repository. Analysis server: .. Error: '' cann't not be found"

The error happends when d.Connect of the Class DSO.Server is called.

Please help, I am completely desperate !

BernhardPlease refer to the following ms article:

Article 1 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q288890)

The repository section of redist.txt and the order of registration of the dso dlls might be the problem.

Good luck.|||That worked.

Thanks a lot !!

Installing client components

OK, we have a dedicated server with a standard SQL Server license. Weeks ago I ordered the Reporting Service from Microsoft, as it comes free with SQL Server but you still have to order it. It came in a bare-bones white envelope without any documentation, just a CD inside.
No problem -- I was able to install it on our server -- it recognized that we had a qualifying SQL Server installation, and installed Reporting Service.
I wanted to install the client components both on my laptop and my development computer at work, but I was wondering how it would know I was entitled to install, since the qualifying database was on a remote machine. Well, there was no problem on my laptop -- it installed OK. I guess it found what it was looking for.
Now I am trying to install it on my computer at work, and now it is asking for a 25-character product key. Well, the CD did not come with a product key. I was not asked to enter a product key on my laptop.
What is going on here,. anyone know?
I am more than fed up with this product .. but we have to use it.

Good Evening!

You have a least received the CD - I subscribed well over 2 months ago and then again last month and have never received the CD - even though I am in Bangkok and was chaged for shipment....
So since we installed SQL 2005 here I thought I could "backload" the RS in SQL 2005 to SQL 2000 - but forget that - won't happen at least I have not figured out a way after an entire weekend. I was really psyched-up offering the calendar conrols in RS 2005 or (Business Intellingence) to our current users - but when you move an solution project to BI or RS 2005 it converts the RDL and you cannot back-load.
I don't know - but did you try to enter your SQL 2000 key when prompted - because it is 25 bytes long ? I would try that and see what happens... But you would think OK - so I enter a 25 byte key when prompted from the CD of RS - how does the RS CD know if the Key is valid - does it synch with the server?
I am curious how this is resolved - so if you do resolve - will you post back?
Best regards,
Joe

|||Well, I can't enter the SQL 2000 key, because I don't have it. We got our SQL Server through the hosting company from whom we rent the dedicated server, so they are the ones that installed it. I did ask them for the key, but they did not want to give it to me.
However, I did find a solution - I installed the SQL Server Developer Edition on my development computer. You know, this is the one that only costs about $50. You can only use it for development, but it is a full version.
When I tried installing Reporting Service after that, it did not ask me for the product key, and it installed successfully. Apparently, it just wants to see a full version of SQL Server.|||Cool!
Just wondering - in ADD or Remove Programs did the CD version of RS install as Microsoft SQL 2000 Reporting Services or Microsoft SQL 2000 Reporting Services Evaluation Edition?
So I wonder why MS makes such a big deal out of getting the production version of RS - especially sinice RS production version only looks for a installed version of SQL because you obviously have two(2) different "keys"
One with the Development Edition
and One for your Server
Interesting!

Installing all components on XP

At one time there was a Reporting Services installation that worked on XP. I
know this because I was training & testing myself on my XP machine which also
has vs.net, SQL 2000 & IIS installed. In my default website, I had
directories called reportserver & reports.
After not using this for a while, I tried to browse (unsuccessfully) to this
website & I could not get to it. even after rsconfig.
I uninstalled Reporting services to give myself the practice, but using the
install I have now, It complains that all the components cannot be installed
with XP. I really shot myself in the foot. Any suggestions, besides shooting
myself in the head?If the SQL Server2000 is developer version, yes, you can installed all
components on your XP. Otherwise, you ca only install client components. The
SQL Server itself, along with Reporting Services, needs Windows Server (2K
or 2K3).

Installing 2005 or not . . .

Hi,

What is the installer checking for when it determines that components have been found on the machine ?

If it is the Registry, what keys does it use ?

Cheers

The easiest would be to do an install and see what happens.

Go to www.sysinternals.com and look around, there's lots of utilities there that could help you figure what's happening on your machine when software is being installed, files read, registry modified etc.

installing .Net framework and sql server issues

I have downloaded .net,visual basic and sql server components (2005 beta 2)
- I had .net 1.0 and no other vb or sql server versions on my machine.
- i uninstalled the 1.0 framework and installed the 2.0 beta 2 version
- when i tried to install sql server it told me that i either had previous versions of sql server or .net on my machine.
- i therefore uninstalled .net beta 2 and tried installing sql server again
-- this time i got a message saying "please install .net 2.0 before proceeding"
-- i have no clues as how to proceed
-- i used the clean up tools--sqlbuw.exe and vs2005_beta_cleanup_tool.exe

Thank you

installation of SQL Server 2005 CTP (June) error 2147944003

During installation of SQL Server 2005 CTP (June) I get the error 2147944003.
This error refers to the installation of tools (client components).
The server components seem to be ok., services are running.
My os is Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600).
Could anybody help me, please?

The checker says:
WBG5 : The current system does not meet minimum hardware requirements for this SQL Server release.

For detailed hardware requirements, see the readme file or SQL Server Books Online.
WBG5 : Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is either not installed or is disabled. IIS is

required by some SQL Server features...

I did prove the requirements. Okay, IIS is not installed, but that can't be the reason.

Any chance you have SQL 2005 Express Edition installed? If so, this should help:

http://blogs.msdn.com/jpapiez/archive/2005/11/14/492534.aspx

jeff.|||Thank you for your help, but that doesn't work.
I have no express edition installed.
The only MS SQL Client-Software I have installed is the native client of my CTP.

Do you still have another idea?|||Search SQLSetup0006_WBG5_Tools.log for "Value 3". This will put you at the location of the log file that has the actual failure information. I doubt this has anything to do with IIS. Post that failure section back here.

Dan|||Thank you for this - it helped.
I could see that it is a space problem on C-partition.
Stupid that you cannot decide another partition.
So I removed some other programs from C - and the installation was successful!

When I try to install SSRS, it doesn't seem to install the server component.
The feature selection shows client components only.
I have a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition (Reporting Services) CD.
Am I missing something or do simply have the wrong CD?
