Installing MSDE SQL 2000 SP4
was a more recent version available. I have not yet installed and wanted to
kow if the Service Pack 4 for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - Desktop Engine
(MSDE 2000) included the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - Database Engine
Components and the Service Pack 4 for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - Analysis
Services Components in it's install or do I have to install them after I set
up the engine for the first time. Let me re-iterate that I am not upgrading
an instance rather I am trying to install an instance with the SP4 updates,
hoping that I get all of the tools that I can in one shot.
ANDREA,
Thank you for your answer. I have another question. I am sending these
files across a network and trying to automate the installation. I know how
to automate the MSDE install after I have extracted the files from the
SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE, but is there a way to use command
lines to extract silently or maybe even feed it a path to extract to? That
way I only have to worry about one file?

I already changed from "Not difined" to "silently succeed" as
mentionned in the MSDE 2000 Release A guide
Unsigned driver installation behavior.
Unsigned non-driver installation behavior
Extract guide
A MSDE 2000 Release A installation will fail if either of the following
security policies has been set to Do not allow installation:
* The Devices: Unsigned driver installation behavior local security
policy for Windows XP.
* The Unsigned non-driver installation behavior local security
policy for Windows 2000.
If you use the Do not allow installation setting, you must change it to
Silently succeed before installing MSDE 2000 Release A. If necessary,
you can return the policy to its previous setting after the installation
is complete.
Note Do not allow installation is not the default setting for these
security policies.
To set these policies:
1. In Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools.
2. Double-click Local Security Policy.
3. Expand Local Policies.
4. Select Security Options.
5. Ensure that the following option in the right pane is set to
Silently Succeed before installing MSDE 2000 Release A:
* On Windows XP and Windows 2003: Devices: Unsigned driver
installation behavior.
* On Windows 2000: Unsigned non-driver installation behavior.
Still doesn't work
Kind regards

the first one indicates a problem "installing" MDAC... actually it should
not as it only has to check for the correct MDAC stack... on WinXP sp2 and
Win2003 MDAC 2.8 of the service pack 4 will not be installed becouse of the
"superior" level of the installed component, perfomed only via Windows
Update...
for the 2nd one I really have no clues...
I do think all this is dependent of a embedded installation of MSDE... can
you please try downloading and executing the original setup.exe boostrapper
installer of MSDE?

Installing A Default Instance AFTER a Named Instance??
It is a Production Server with 3 NAMED Instances and NO Default Instance.
Does anyone know if I can rerun the SQL Server Install and add a DEFAULT Instance to this box without disrupting the other Named Instances?Except for a reboot after the install, you should have no problems installing a default instance.|||Thank you : )|||Will the default instance automatically have the name of the Server - or is there a way to give it name - like you would a named instance.. sorry if the question sounds stupid.. : )|||The default instance will have the name of the server. The only way around this that I can think of off the top of my head is to give the machine a DNS alias.|||Thanks !!! I'm not so much worried about the name as I am Blowing up the Server by installing a Default Instance AFTER it has already been populated with Named Instances.

they still showed RTM and 8.00.194.
I did see a whitepaper about this regarding SP1 and the fix was to apply the
latest SP which is SP4, so this does not apply to me.
The other option was to edit the registry key which I do not feel

Has anyone else come across this before??
Hi Kristen
Your version number is not SP1 (384) but the RTM version.
Did you run the setup from the directory that you unzipped the files to?
Have you more than one instance of SQL Server running and have you upgraded
them all?
Did you run the service pack setup from the server?

Installed SP4 - Version # okay but Product Level wrong?
I have the developer edition of MS SQL and applied SP4 to it. Here's what I get when I execute SELECT @.@.Version:
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.2039 (Intel X86) May 3 2005 23:18:38 Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
According to the readme, here are the version numbers for each service pack:
Do I trust the Version Number or the Product Level? Anyone know what the story is? TIA.
The numbers are TDS( tabular data stream) yes the increament is based on service packs in SQL Sever 2000 and in Win2k you are missing two service packs because I have a box in Houston running it and as of 2005 December I had SP4, I have installed the product that is SQL Server 2000 on all existing os including XP home. I also have SQL Server 2000 SP3 and SP3a in .sql files. So you just need two service packs for Win2k. Hope this helps.|||Thanks Caddre. I didn't realize it was reporting the OS service pack as opposed to the SQL Server service pack. I'm aware I haven't applied the latest Windows SP - I'm deferring IE 7 for the moment.

EDIT
(Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
(SQL Server 2000 Original Release 8.00.194 RTM
Database Components SP1 8.00.384 SP1
Database Components SP2 8.00.534 SP2
Database Components SP3, SP3a or MSDE 2000 Release A. 8.00.760 SP3
Database Components SP4 8.00.2039 SP4)
It was reporting both because the first is for Win2k while the TDS number are for SQL Server 2000 Service Pack because it default to 80 and the extra numbers defines the service packs. One more thing build 2600 in Win2k is Advanced Server.

there is an internal error and it says to see the error logs. The error from
the log is shown below.

When running SQL profiler on the SQL server we see that there is no attempt
to connect to the report server database from the web service, however we can
see connections being made every 10 seconds that look to be from the windows
service.
ThanksWhat errors are thrown with "rsavtivate"? Have you tried running "rsconfig"
prior to running rsactivate?

into the Keys table using the stored procedure AnnounceOrGetKey.
Unfortunately the reportserver website still returns an 'access is denied'
error. The log file still shows the same stack trace and it seems like the
problem occurs in the RSManagedCrypto.RSCrypto.ExportPublicKey() function.
Anybody got any ideas.

seemed to fix our problems. According to several places online, including
Microsoft, it is recommended that you not give the ASPNET account that
privilege. So after the report server was running properly what we did was
remove that privilege from the ASPNET account and we restarted IIS. The
report server still works. It seems to me that the Act as Part of the
Operating System privilege just needs to be added to the ASPNET account on
the first access to the report server.
Anybody see any problems with this solution?

Best rgds,
JoeHave you used this CD or copy to install other places? Also, after this install fails have you looked to see if it shows up in the installed programs list? You might need to clean the registry up for this to work now. I would call MS support on this one though if you can't figure it out, because you might end up reinstalling the OS to get it to work now. It's $250 per incident.
I would try another CD first if you have one. :)

Installation of RS 2000 on SQL 2000 with SP4
installed. We recieve the error:
"This edition of the Reporting Server Database is not supported on the
edition of SQL Server 2000 you have chosen"
Thanks for any helpYou must have matching editions. For example, if your SQL installation
is 'Standard', you must install a Standard edition of MSRS. If your
SQL installation is 'Enterprise' edition you need to install an
enterprise edition of MSRS.
To determine your version of SQL, open Query Analyzer and execute the
statement 'SELECT @.@.VERSION'
Andy Potter|||Also, make sure that you are not running personal edition. RS does not run
at all on personal edition.

installation media
I am running SQL Server 2000 SP4 on Windows Server 2003 and IIS Server 6.0
on the same machine. I have a SQL Server 2000 installation CD. I don't find
Reporting Services included in that CD. From where can I get the Reporting
Services component? Thanks in advance.SQL Server2000' Reporting Services was released (2003) well after SQL
Server2000 (1999), as add-on. So, if your SQL Server CD was acquired before
RS available, it would not contain RS obviously. Usually, SQL Server2000
Reporting Services comes in a seperate disk. If you have a legal copy of SQL
Server2000, you are entitled for free SQL Server Reporting Services. You may
have to contact the dealer who sold you the SQL Server copy, if you do not
have one.

Installation Issue
I am Installing Reporting services enterprise Version On Windows 2000 Server
with SP4. The Installtion went smooth except at the finish dialog it gave me
the Warning message "Setup could not initialize the Report server. you must
manually initialize the report server"
My reportserver services shows started in the services window.
I tried running
"C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_regiis.exe -i . which
upated the framework succesfully.
Also the ASPNet user has the read/write permission on the Temporary ASP.NET
files folder.
I also ran rsactivate.exe successfully.
I also ran rsconfig.exe successfully.
I have given ASPNET user the Admin rights as well as It has the read/write
rights over the Asp.NET temporary files folder.
I have all the servers on the same machine.
Inspite of all these exercises when I browse for the http:\\Localhost page
it gives me Application error with message "Access denied to 'c:\inetpub'.
Failed to start monitoring file changes. "
Any suggestions please !!!
Thanks in advance.
siajHey ..
I solved the problem...
I uninstalled the Reporting services and reinstalled it with two change
a. I installed it on the F; drive instead of the rot drive C
The Instalation went on successfullly but again I got the same warning to
start the services manually.
b. Then I added read/write rights to the ASPNET user over the INETPUB folder.
(I think this worked out my problem)
Now I can browse on the http:\\localhost\reportserver
Cheers,
siaj

installation fails on xp home - failed to configure server
First I attemtped to upgrade MSDE to sp4, and I got the error
"This product is not installed",
So I removed the installation of MSDE and just installed sp4 directly. But
when I do, I get the error
"Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and
setup error logs for more information.
MSI (s) (A4!4C) [12:01:18:241]: Product: Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine
(VLM) -- Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error
logs and setup error logs for more information."
The only other line in the log that metions a failure is
Setting SqlEdition property failed
The installer then backs everthing out and removes the service. The service
was already installed and running at that point.
I am using SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE to install,
Thanks,
Brian

this usually means you did not comletely uninstall MSDE (not your fault,
just MSDE fault :D)
I succesfully cleared my registry and file system following
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290991 KB article
adiveces but the Windows Installer entries, that can be cleared using the
Windows Installer SDK tool Msizap.exe as per
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;320873 (never tried)

|||Got it fixed.
To get it to work I did the following:
1. Intalled a default instance. I had removed it as well. That worked.
2. re-registering sqldmo.dll. I did this because DbaMgr got an automation
error when connecting to the default instance
3. Installed the named instance I wanted. This time it worked.
Notes:
The error I was getting was
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]General network error.
Check your network documentation.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionRead (recv()).
Things learned along the way:
1. If the install fails, then enable verbose logging with /L*v
C:\MSDELog.log. Look in the log when its finished for what failed. When you
get the error message box, LEAVE IT THERE, and go look at the log. The last
thing it did is the last line.
2. If you get the error "Unable to configure server", then look in the file
cnfgsvr.out. It will be in C:\Program files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL$<instancename>\Inatall (assuming drive c)
3. To clean manully to get the installer to resintall completely if a
partial install is left on the system:
- Run Windows Installer SDK tool Msizap.exe as per
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;320873
The command is MSIZAP.EXE" T {product code}. The product code can be
found in the install log (C:\MSDELog.log in the example above). The product
code for MDSE service pack 4 was
{E09B48B5-E141-427A-AB0C-D3605127224A} so I ran
MSIZAP.EXE" T {E09B48B5-E141-427A-AB0C-D3605127224A}
- Manually delete the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL
or C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$<instancename>. Make sure you
look at cnfgsvr.out first if you need too!
